    • Photo: "Franklin Soldier Is Shot; Full Military Rites Friday" The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday March 21, 1968
"A 21 year old Vietnam veteran from Franklin was shot and later died in Chicago early Monday morning.
Kenneth Clendenin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Clendenin of 6397 Scholl Road, died at 7:50 a.m. in Henrotin Hospital in Chicago, about three hours after he was shot in the head by an unknown assailant, Chicago homicide detectives told the Chronicle.
The youth, known as a friendly and personable young man, graduated from Franklin High School in 1965. He had just returned from a year's tour of duty in Vietnam this past December.
Full Military rites by the 24th MP Detachment at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. will be conducted Friday morning at 10:00 o'clock at the Eaton Funeral Home with the Rev. John Wedgewood officiating.
Friends my call at the funeral home from 3:00 to 5:00 and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, it was announced.
A Specialist Five in the United States Army, the youth would have been in the service two years this coming June.
Besides his parents, Kenneth is survived by an eight year old brother, Scott. Another brother, Gary 22, died May 6, 1965.
Many men in the MP detachment served with Clendenin in Vietnam and were his friends.
According to Detective Sam Grenier, who is investigating the case, Clendenin and two other men, neither of whom was hurt in the altercation, are Larry Anderson of Michigan, and James Pecka, of Chicago.
All three were attached to the 204th Military Police Detachment at Ft. Sheridan, about 25 miles from the Windy City.
Detectives said Pecka had borrowed a car and the three had gone to the Skoi Lounge on State Street in the near North side night club district.
They were there about two hours until 3:30 "when the band in the lounge quit for the night." The trio left about 3:35 a.m. and began walking north on State Street towards Delaware Avenue.
As they walked, detectives said, they heard someone use what Grenier described as a profane word.
The three turned to apparently see who had said it. At that point, two men walked up to the servicemen, and one pulled a gun.
Anderson began to walk, with the assailant following him.
Then, according to detectives, Clendenin began following the assailant, and near the other side, Clendenin reportedly told the gunman to "cool it" and added "we don't want any trouble with you."
It was at this point that the dead serviceman placed his foot on the curb, and the gunman turned and fired his gun, hitting young Clendenin in the head. That was at 3:40 a.m.
He was taken to the hospital where emergency treatment was attempted, but he died at 7:50 a.m., Grenier reported.
Grenier indicated police are having a difficult time finding clues in the case since there was "no provocation" or "no apparent motive" for accosting the three servicemen, or for the killing itself.
The only means of identifying the assailants will be the description reportedly given police by Pecka and Anderson.
Kenneth has been a scout for several years and had also been a member of the local Explorer Post. He had participated in a variety of school activities."

    • "Soldier Now Declared Dead But Mother Not Convinced," obituary, The Western Star (Lebanon, Ohio), August 16, 1978, p. 12A
"A Lebanon Soldier, missing in action in Vietnam since early 1969, has been declared dead, a change that his mother said "has not convinced me."
"It may be final to the Army but not to me," declared Mrs. Bertha Conger, concerning the fate of Staff Sgt. John E. conger Jr. "I still have hopes this latest news is not final."
Mrs. Conger, who lives in Cedar Ridge Apartments, Lebanon, was notified in early August about the change of her son's status. The message came from the Department of the Army and said in part:
"All available information pertaining to his status has been given careful consideration. The circumstances attendant too his disappearance, plus the lapse of time without any further information to support a presumption of survival, can lead only to the conclusion that he is no longer alive.
"Further, the debriefing of returned prisoners of war following the ceasefire agreement of Jan. 27, 1973, had revealed no information of his fate. Therefore, a determination has been made by the Department of the Army to change his status from missing in action to presumed dead, as of July 31, 1978."
Mrs. Conger said there are still too many unanswered questions for her to accept this decision. she noted nothing was ever found to identify him, although the remains of others in his platoon were later discovered.
"I feel one day I will know the final answer one way of another," she said. "My husband died in 1974 not knowing what happened to John; I feel I will find out. Perhaps this is wishful thinking on my part but I can't give up hope."
Mrs. Conger admits she has no thoughts or theories on where her son would be if he is still alive.
She commented that the Vietnam War was of political nature and the United States should never have entered. But on the other hand, she does not believe America should establish diplomatic relations with such a recent enemy; at least not under the present situation.
"Before this is done we should be allowed to send in personnel to look for our missing boys," she said.
As far as sending aid to Vietnam, Mrs. Conger sad she feels, "we have enough to do at home without giving our money away."
"We don't owe a thing to Vietnam," she stressed.
Her son was raised in Lebanon and attended local schools. He enlisted in the Army June of 1964 and left for Vietnam on Dec. __ of that year. He served as a radio technician with the 19th Infantry Battalion for about a month before the skirmish in which he never returned.
Mrs. Conger said there is one final honor due her son. She will be presented his medals which are being sent from Washington in the near future."
