He defended our nation by serving in World War II as a pilot in the China-Burma-India Theater. He flew supplies to the front lines of battle and returned wounded soldiers needing medical attention to military surgical units behind those lines. Interestingly, while piloting his aircraft near Rome Army Air Field in New York, Howard suffered a gunshot wound to his head from ground-in his own country! He prevented a mid-air collision with two other aircraft and avoided any further injuries or property damage on the ground. The United States Air Force recognized Howard's heroism with a very belated award of the Meritorious Service Medal in 2005. . . ."

Besides his wife he leaves three children, Joyce, 8; Margaret, 3, and Mary, 5 months."

      " MASON - Reverend E. Lee Niswander conducted memorial services last Tuesday, at 11 a. m. at the Ray Gallimore Funeral Home for Cpl. Kenneth Glackin, who lost his life at Iwo Jima, March 5th, 1945. Impressive military services were held at the grave in Rose Hill Cemetery by the Ralph S. Penquite Post 194 of Mason, several of whom were schoolmates, close friends and buddies of Cpl. Glackin and all knew him to be of of Mason's best young men and respected by everyone.
      "Surviving relatives are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Glackin, his wife and three young daughters, one brother, George Glackin of Mason, and two sisters, MRs. Henry Brenner of Foster, and Mrs. Dean Walton of Waynesville, and many friends."

      " . . . Col. Gravenstine enlisted in the Army Air Corps through an aviation cadet training program offered at Wright Air Force Base in Dayton. He had combat duty in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, making 119 combat missions over Italy and the south of France. He trained a combat crew during the Korean and Vietnam wars, he held two positions on the Air Staff in the Pentagon and a third with the U.S. Air Force in Europe, stationed in Germany.
      In 1968, he assumed his duties as deputy commander of the 504th Tactical Air Support Group in Vietnam, logging 200 combat hours in forward tactical control aircraft. Col. Gravenstine flew between 250 and 300 combat hours over all areas of Vietnam. While in Wiesbaden, Germany he coordinated the entourage of President John F. Kennedy to Germany. He retired in 1971 with the rating of a Command Pilot and the rank of colonel.
      Among the more than 16 awards and decorations he received were the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with eight oak leeaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Vietnamese Staff Honor Medal First Class. . . ."

      "S/Lt Greenup was shot down on Jannuary 27'1944. His plane was perfectly ditched in the Mediterranean' sea, in the bay of La Ciotat, located between Toulon and Marseille, on the French Riviera.
      His wingman, the S/Lt James G. Riley, 21 years old, married, of New York, was also shot down and unfortunately killed at the same time, in the same conditions, and in the same bay of La Ciotat (three nautical miles separate the two wrecks of their plane which were discovered and formally indentified, not far of the Frenches coast.
      Men and machines belonged to the 15th USAAF, 14th Fighter Group. "
