    "Because he opposed the war, he first claimed status as a conscientious objector and chose civil service as a firefighter as an alternative to the military.  He was eventually forced to enlist and given a noncombat position in the Pacific as a medic and lab technician aboard Army ships. ... Upon his discharge in 1945, Mr. Faux entered the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, graduated and began preaching as a Quaker minister."

      " Maj. Gen. Wilbur H. Fricke, 85, of Waynesville died Monday, Sept. 7 at home.
      He received his B.S. degree and ROTC at Purdue University in 1936 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He also graduated from the Army Field Artillery School, Command and General Staff College and the Infantry School. In 1937, he accepted a commission in the 136th Field Artillery, Ohio National Guard. In 1940 he was ordered into federal service as a captain. He was promoted to major in 1942, and was then assigned to the Pacific Theater for the next three years.
      Serving first in Fiji and the Solomon Islands, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1944 and given command of the 136th Field Artillery battalion, which he led in combat at Bougainville Island and Luzon.
      Returning to the United Stated in June of 1945, he was released from active duty in February, 1946. He returned to the Ohio Army National Guard in 1946, again commanding the 136th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1947, he was promoted to colonel and assigned to command the 371st Div. Artillery in 1961 and was federally recognized as brigadier general on Nov. 14, 1961.
      He was appointed assistant division commander, 37th Infantry Division in 1963 and commanding general in 1965 with federal recognition as major general effective Dec. 7, 1965.
      He received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the retired officers of the 37th Artillery Div., the VFW, and Waynesville Rotary Club. ..."

      "Fugett died Oct. 26, 1944, after his squadron’s B-24 Liberator bomber was shot down during a mission against a Japanese fleet near Morotal Island in the South Pacific Ocean. Fugett and nine other crew members of the Army Air Forces 307th Bombardment Group were never found.  Fugett, 20, spent only 10 days in his squadron before his plane went down."

      "A radio operator, Fugett was just 20 years old when he was killed during an air strike more than 65 years ago. The B-24 Liberator Bomber he was in was gunned down on Oct. 26, 1944, over the South Pacific during the Battle of Leyte Gulf - considered the largest naval engagement of World War II. His entire crew of nine perished. Although a search was conducted, their bodies were never found."
