Eugene Ralph Helton (c1824-1943)

Former Springboro Lad Killed in Florida,
Killed In Florida.

Eugene Ralph Helton, 19, aviation machinist mate second class, was drowned at Pensacola, Florida, following an automobile accident, his parents, Mr. and MRs. John Conley, of Lebanon Route One, learned Saturday morning in a telegram from the War Department.
Helton who resided at Middletown prior to his enlistment in the Navy a year ago, graduated from Springboro High School and was well known in that community.

LOSES LIFE IN OKINAWA BATTLE

Cpl. Kenneth Helton, 20, who was a member of the sixth marine division fighting on Okinawa, was killed on that island April 13, it was learned here Friday.
Helton is the son of Mrs. John Conley of Route 3, Lebanon, and the grandson of Mrs. Lillian Aylstock, 1420 Young St.
In the service three years this month, Helton trained at Parris Island, S.C., and New River, N. C. Home last January Helton reported to New River following his furlough and was shipped to the south pacific from there.
He fought for two months on Bouganville [sic] before going on to Okinawa.
His brother, Eugene Ralph Helton, 19, an aviation machinist mate second class of the navy, was drowned Nov. 5, 1943, as a result of an automobile accident at Pennsecalo,[sic] Fla.
Helton attended Springboro High school and shortly before his graduation enlisted in the marine corps.
Survivors other than his mother and grandmother are one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Chambers, of Middletown, a brother, Robert, with the navy in the Philippines; a half-sister, Martha Joe Conley, of Lebanon Route 3, four step-brothers, 1st Lt. Raymond Conley, in England; John Conley, Jr. of the navy at Iwo Jima; Dean Conley of the army infantry in Oklahoma, and Robert Conley, at Home.
