  • Harry F. Franz (1878-1899) - Corporal, Company M, 1st Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps
    • photo of gravestone at Murdoch Cemetery (removed from cemetery 12 miles outside of Havana, Cuba in 1900)
    • Obituary of Harry F. Franz (from transcription of a handwritten paper dated 22 Feb 1900)
"Harry F. Franz was born Apr. 12, 1878. Died Aug. 9, 1899. Aged, 21 yr. 3 mo. and 27 days. Enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army, in Nov. 1898, being assigned to Co. M, 1st Inft., 2nd Brigade, 1st division, 2nd Army Corps. Shortly after enlisting his company was ordered to Cuba and stationed at Pinar-del-Rio. Here Harry was promoted to the rank of Corporal, showing his uprightness of character in the service of his country. In April 1899 he was stricken with that dread disease "Cuban fever" with which his rugged constitution battled until Aug. 9. After he was taken sick he was removed to Havana Hospital where every effort was made to cure him, but without avail. His body was first interred twelve miles out from Havana. Today his body is here surrounded by parents, brothers, sisters, school-mates and a host of friends. We all loved him for his goodness of heart, his unselfish devotion to parents and friends and his whole souled patriotism. We "weep with those that weep" and are glad that we have hearts that can share the sorrows of others and comfort the mourner. To these weeping ones we can say from the depths of our hearts, "Weep not, he is not dead but sleepeth." Earthly turmoil the dim of camp and field are over and we trust he is reaping the reward of the faithful in a land of eternal Springtime. Schoolmates, while Harry is gone where out letters no longer can reach him, we can look forward with bright hopes to the time we can go where he is to live forever in a land that knows no parting."
