Bounty Land Claim

On this Twenty Second day of June A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me R.M. Anderson a Notary Public duly commissioned and sworn; in and for the County and State aforesaid and lawfully authorized to administer oaths therein, William Hilt aged sixty years , a resident of Placerville in the State of California who being duly sworn according to law, declares he is the identical William Hilt who was a Private in the company of Timothy Titus in Ohio Regiment in the war with Great Britain in the year 1812.
that he enlisted as a substitute for Henry Fawks in said company + Regiment at Lebanon, Warren Co. Ohio on or about the First day of September A.D. 1813 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said War for the term of fourteen days, and was honorably discharged at Lebanon, Ohio on or about the fifteenth day of March A.D. 1814 .
He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the Act of Congress, approved march 3rd, 1855. He also declares that he has not received a warrant for Bounty Land, under this or any other Act of Congress, or made any other application therefore.

The foregoing declaration and affidavits were sworn to and subscribed before me on the day and year above written; and I certify that I know the affiants to be credible persons and William Hilt the claimant is the person he represents himself to be, and that I have no interest in the claim. On this thirty first day of July AD One thousand Eight hundred and Seventy One personally appeared before me Austin Hawkins County Clerk and Clerk of the County Court a Court of record of Siskiyou County California aforesaid William Hilt aged about Eighty years a resident of Cottonwood Township in the County of Siskiyou and State of California who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is married that his wifes name was Susan Mace to whom he was married at Santa Clara County near Belville in the state of Illinois on the _____ day of December 1819. that he served the full period of sixty days towit for the term of about four months on the Military Service of the United States in the War of 1812; that he is the identical William Hilt who was drafted in Captain Timothy Titus Company of ____Regiment ____ Brigade _____Division at Warren County in the State of Ohio on the ___ day of September he thinks (it?) in the year 1814 as he now recollects. And was honorably discharged on the ____ day of March 1815.

Michael Hilt writes,
" The remaining pages describe his service as a Wagoner, transporting materials from Ft. St. Clair to Ft. Wayne, listing other members of his Company. Other letters from the County Clerk on file describe his emigrating to California in 1849 and at the time of deposition, surviving with a small farm plot and delivering milk."
