This article is a part of a series titled "The Last Fifty Years of Union Village Shakers" which are original stories and articles by Katherine Lollar Rowland about the last Ohio Shakers, their life, the way it was in the declining years of Union Village, and also of their contacts with the greater community of Warren County when they were no longer able to be self-sufficient. Other articles in the series will be added as they are completed.

COCHRAN/COUGHMAN/CORCORAN, SARAH E.

Born October 5, 1823; Died September 5/7, 1908; 85 years of age;
Census records from 1850 through 1900 list her as born in Ohio; her father born in Pennsylvania;, her mother born in Virginia
Census of 1870 lists her occupation as "works in house"; census of 1880 lists her as "Eldress"
Information from: Union Village Shakers, Warren Co., Lebanon, OH 1805-1920 compiled by Cardinal Research, Ellen F. Van Houten and Florence Cole.

Although Center Family journals show that she was buried at North Family Cemetery, there was no headstone visible for her when photographs were made in August, 2004. The wide variation in the spelling of the name may account for the scarcity in other literature of references to her long life as a Shaker.
