Hannah (Proud) Earnhart (1806-1896)

Death of a Pioneer
Mrs. Hannah Earnhart died at the home of her son, Alonzo, near Dodds on Sunday morning and was buried Tuesday afternoon. She was born April 7th 1806. She was the daughter of Peter and Abigail Proud who came from New Jersey to Warren county in 1805 and settled on this same farm. Mrs. Proud whose maiden name was Turner, was a sister of Mrs. James Wills, who with her husband came from New Jersey in 1798 and settled the farm now owned by Marshall Earnhart. Another sister was the wife of Richard Kirby. They lived on the farm of which the Kirby graveyard then formed a part. In those early times the only roads were mere footpaths made by cutting the bushes and blazing the trees through the dense and almost unbroken forest.
She was married September 20th 1826 to Jacob Earnhart, who was born in Lucerne county, Pennsylvania, in 1802 and came with his parents to Warren county in 1812, and located on the farm now owned by James Earnhart. At the death of his father in 1821 he fell heir to one-third of the farm. After marriage they occupied this place until the spring of 1844 when they purchased and moved to the home where they spent the rest of their lives. He died August 1888. They traveled life's pathway together sixty-two years. Five sons and five daughters were born to them, and four sons and two daughters are still living.
Deceased was a member of the U. B. church at Utica. Much credit is due and many blessing are in store for those who so patiently and carefully ministered to her wants in her declining years.
