Marysville, Yuba Co., California, was & is located some 42 or
so miles north of Sacramento. The town of Honcut still exists about 15
miles north northeast of Marysville. "Black legs" and "shoulder
strikers" were slang terms for gamblers and 'rowdies', The 1850 Federal Census listing for James Barton Hart

(back to top) | [Two letters written by James Barton Hart, youngest son of
James & Charlotte (Barton) Hart, to Warren Co. resident (?) Mr. William Cose Jr. exist in the file. Why the letters came to be filed in the Box is unknown but fortunate since J.B. Hart posted them not only from 'Gold Rush-era' California but from near the gold fields as well (see his reference in the 2nd letter to the low water levels permitting the stream beds to be 'worked'). It's possible that Mr. Cose (?) was either running the old James Hart farm for his heirs or was, instead, buying the place. The latter possibility seems to agree more closely with the amount of money involved.] |
