      Pension file for Hannah Jane Nicholson, mother of Private Joseph H. Nicholson, Company 79th OVI (17 images)
      Joseph H. Nicholson enrolled as a 20 year old Private at Dayton, Ohio on 18 Jan 1864 and was mustered into Co B, 79th OVI for 3 years. Company report dated 9 Jun 1865 indicate that he died at Nashville, Tennessee on 23 Jul 1864 from wounds received in action on 15 Jun 1864. It does not indicate where he was wounded – perhaps Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. Surgeon General’s records listed his name as James rather than Joseph.
      He was the son of Robert Nicholson & Hannah Jane Johnson who were married on 5 Feb 1839 in Warren County by Elias Spining, JP. Robert Nicholson died on 11 Mar 1863 without any property and left his widow with only their household goods and about $150.
      His mother, Hannah Jane Nicholson, age 46, of Lebanon, Ohio, filed for a pension on 21 Feb 1865 and was awarded an $8 monthly pension on 28 Aug 1866 commencing 23 Jul 1864 (Application #84513, Certificate #82277). She continued to receive her pension until her death on 11 Nov 1900. Affidavits to support her claim were given by Charles E. Sausser, George W. Sausser, Eliza Miller & Rebecca C. Winner. They indicated that after his father died, Joseph helped his mother with the rent and household supplies and after entering the military, sent her $50 from his 1st military pay. He died before he was paid a second time.
