Muddy Creek Cemetery
aka Keltner Cemetery
Deerfield Township, Warren County, Ohio

The Muddy Creek Baptist Church was organized in 1804 and the use of this graveyard is thought to have begun about that time. Available records list burials from 1811 to 1868. See comments below from Beers and from Bogan. The plaque reads,
Deerfield Township; Keltner Cemetery Est. 1803
This memorial erected in everlasting remembrance of those buried here in these hallowed grounds
Est. May 8, 1998
Board of Trustees:
Thomas A. Raga, President; William B. Morand, Vice-President; Lawrence E. Backus, Ben Dotson - Clerk, Carl T. Muennich - Sexton

  • North side of Western Row Road (TR 54), a short distant east of Butler-Warren Road, about 1/2 way to Olympia Drive. The cemetery is maintained by Deerfield Township.

  • Beers History of Warren County, Ohio, page 642 says,
"In 1803, the Union yard was opened for the interment of the dead. This is in the Bowyer community, about a mile north of the present Union Church. About the same time the Muddy Creek Graveyard was started."
  • "From Palmyra To Kirkwood - The Early Progress Of Mason" by Dallas Bogan says,
"The early Baptists of the township found solace worshiping in each other's home. In 1804, they were recognized and admitted into the Miami Baptist Association. There is the possibility that William Mason's brother, the Rev. John Mason, was accountable for the congregation. Sometime later, a church not yet built, allowed the members to hold their services in a log schoolhouse along Muddy Creek near the Butler County line. A church was built later just west of this location along with the establishment of a cemetery. The first names recorded at the church were: John Seward, T.T. Brown and Robert Witham. "

    • This database was submitted to the USGenWeb Archives by Sherry Jenkins on 9 November 1999. The submission was based on data received from Lita and Erik Yarberry who compiled the information in conjunction with the 1998 cemetery restoration that was done by Carl Muennich, Secton and Erik Yarberry for his Eagle Scout Project. This listing identifies 18 additional burials not found by the Warren County Genealogical Society efforts described above. Seven of these were based on data other than a tombstone reading; six were based on stones that were found during the 1998 restoration but not replaced in the cemetery. The other five were footstones present in 1998 but not found during the 2006 visit. If you have photos of any of these stones, please consider sharing them with us. See Below
