The next property as we continue north on the east side of old 48 is of special interest at the present time because it is to be the site of the new Bethesda Hospital., in fact, a groundbreaking took place there on August 26th for a $31,000,000 "three-story 96,000 square foot medical center by TriHealth, Bethesda's parent company. It's expected to be completed by winter of 2006.
The Wilson
family , perhaps one of the most distinguished that Warren County has
ever had, came from Rockbridge County, Virginia. Robert
Wilson bought property on The Ridge in 1843, , although the family
had first settled around Hopkinsville, which was named for fellow early settlers
from Virginia. Robert and Martha Smith Wilson had eight children.
Of these, three of the sons became lawyers, judges and members of state and
national legislatures. Five of the sons served in the Civil War, the fifth,
Robert Bruce entered with the first company to leave Lebanon,
served for the entire length of the war, left the army as a Captain, and then
entered his practice as a lawyer in Cincinnati.
The Wilsons' only daughter, Elizabeth H., married Allison
L. Scott, whom we have already met as the neighbor to whom little Nettie
Roosa ran for help after the brutal attack on her family.
The property remained in the ownership of the Wilson heirs until around 1900 when it was purchased by J. W. Couden, and was later inherited by Eugene H. Couden, and his wife, LaVerne, the daughter of Sylvan Lewis, who lived with the Coudens at the end of his life. and was always most chivalrous in helping me, off and on the horse when I would ride bareback on errands from our house on the other side of the road.
Later on the property was purchased by William and Pauline Koch, and went from them to their daughter Joanne, and her husband Bill Rainey. When the Raineys sold the property to the hospital last year it was with the stipulation that the house would be burned as practice by the Fire Department, Bill having been the Lebanon Fire Chief for many years.
