The Snook Family

Going back to the east side of the road, the first farm north of the Ridge School was purchased by Samuel French from Robert & Jane Stewart in 1839. It came into the Snook family in 1857 when Mary Eliza French married Morris K. Snook.

Mary Eliza was the granddaughter of the original Samuel French through his son, Samuel S. French, who was the son of the first Samuel's second marriage with Nancy Sibbett.

Morris K. Snook was the son of Ellison Snook, whose father Capt. John M. Snook had come to Ohio in 1802 from New Jersey. There were several lines of Snooks who came into the southwest part of Ohio as early pioneers and many of them settled around South Lebanon. But, as we have seen, several of them bought land up on The Ridge.

At this particular point we are interested in Ellison, who purchased a farm at the very north end of The Ridge (in Turtlecreek Township right near the intersection of The Ridge Road and Cook Road.) This place later became The Foley farm. One of Ellison's sons, Morris, as we have seen, married Mary Eliza French, and they lived on the farm just north of the school. I well remember going there to oyster stew parties when I was a little girl.

In recent years several interesting things have happened on this land. Between 1932 and 1939 Corwin S. Fred bought the property and established a landing strip for small airplanes. Around 1951 Clifford and Ruth Brown purchased the property and it became Brownie's Airport and Machine Shop, at one time with as many as 27 aircraft using the field. They also started the Cincinnati Sky Divers Club. The field is now owned by a family by the name of Singh, SINGH many of whom live in the Mason and West Chester area. Ruth Brown lives here at Otterbein and often entertains by playing the piano in different residence lobbies.
