The Scott Family

Going back to the east side of Old 48, the first farm north of the Dilatushes was the Scott farm. And as we go through the information about the Scotts we begin to see just how interconnected the early families all were.

Nicholas and Rhoda Smith Scott came to Ohio from Cape May, New Jersey, around 1817. Their first daughter, Abiah, married James M. Armstrong, the name we saw as one who had previously owned the Roosa land. They also had a son, Allison L. Scott, whom we met as the A. L. Scott to whom Jennie Roosa ran for help.

Allison Scott, (who was a wagon maker as well as a farmer) married, as his first wife, Elizabeth H. Wilson, whose distinguished family we will soon meet, and as his second wife, Anna Pendery, whose son Thomas Pence Scott owned the land in 1903.

Thomas Pence Scott married Adelaide Belle Slagle in 1897. And as we go north we see that another of the Slagle sisters married Raymond Dunham, a part of the extensive Dunham family that we will also meet. The Scotts lived in the fine homestead until Thomas died in 1937 and his widow Adelaide lived there until the Ohio State Highway Department took the land for new Rt. 48. The site is now the Ohio State Patrol office, at what is called Nelson Drive. Incidentally, almost all of the early houses were of frame, only two of them in the full three miles being of brick.

Thomas Scott, Jr., and his wife, Esther Stibbs, after the Scott homestead was destroyed, bought the adjoining property that had belonged to a series of owners. In fact, continuing now on the east side of old Rt. 48 ~
