Families of the "The Ridge" Community of Warren County

Dunham, Beedle & Cochran Families

At one time all of the land west of Rt. 48 to the north end of The Ridge was owned by some members of the Dunham family. Moving north and west from the edge of the Bruce Lollar 34 acres, there were two connecting Dunham farms, both of them with long lanes leading back from Ridge road to the farm buildings.

Rebecca Dunham Kartalia concisely outlined this rather complex situation in "Mom, the Threshers Are Coming!", her delightful book about The Ridge in the 1920s which covers her heritage and growing up years on one of those Dunham farms.

I quote " Thomas Gibbs Dunham (1810-1874) in 1838 purchased a farm from David Reynolds. John Edward and James Franklin were two of the sons of Thomas Gibbs Dunham. James Franklin remained on the father's farm, married Elvira Burdsal ( daughter of Abner Burdsal) and they adopted a girl, Myrtle Goodpasture, who married Emmer Beedle and this farm became known as the Beedle farm."

The name Beedle, of course, is well known in connection with events that happened right here near Otterbein: Beedle's Station, the first settlement in the Lebanon area, and also in connection with the first years of the Shaker settlement, first known as Turtlecreek, later as Union Village.

Emmer Jesse Beedle, was described in Law's 1919 Memoirs of the Miami Valley , as "among the progressive and public-spirited men of Warren County engaged in maintaining the agricultural supremacy of this part of the Miami Valley. Emmer and Myrtle had two children, Wilbur and Elvira. Elvira became Elvira Cochran, and had four children, Donald, James, Laurine and Jean. Laurine, became a nurse, and now lives here at Otterbein.

To go back to Rebeccca's book:
"John E. Dunham (1841-1913) married Letitia Jameson. After his service in the Civil War and his marriage to Letitia, John purchased a farm adjacent to his father's from Ephraim Snook."

John and Letitia had three sons, one of whom, Raymond, married Ethel Ellen Slagle. They had two daughters: Mildred became a teacher and married Walter Sheehan. The Sheehans lived in Waynesville, had two sons, Richard and Warren. Mildred died just a few years ago, well on the way to being 100 years old. , Rebecca, became a nurse and married Mitchell Kartalia. They now live near Chicago, Illinois.

Two other Dunham farms, which became known as the Bailey Farm and the Corwin Farm, were in the Turtlecreek Township portion of The Ridge..
