David Reeder Whitaker (____-1880) - Undertaker and member of the I.O.O.F.

  • D. R. Whitaker (in business est. 1833 – circa 1874)
David Reeder “D.R.” Whitaker was the first person listed as an undertaker in the Rose Hill Interment Register. His first known burial was in the Pisgah Graveyard in 1833. He was consistently listed as a carpenter in the census records. On 9 July 1880, his children asked The Warren County, Ohio Probate Court to appoint a guardian for him. His personal estate included “a hearse, set of carpenter tools, notes, and book accounts”. Also, a lot in the Village of Mason. Shortly before D.R. married Mary Ann Thompson, he with Daniel H. Whitaker paid John and Martha Casseday $38.00 for lot #46 in Mason. On 7 March 1846, Daniel H. Whitaker and Anna Mariah, his wife quit claimed their interest in the same lot to D.R. for $200.00. This lot did not transfer again until his heirs sold it to Peter Wikoff on 16 March 1881. D.R. died in August 1880, and was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery Section 3, Lot 189 next to his wife who died earlier the same year. On 7 November 1892, his family was removed from the Old Mason Graveyard and interred on his lots in Rose Hill.
