The Family & Descendants of Franklin Drake and Melissa (Hatfield) Drake

Photos contributed by Michelle Holmes, the great great granddaughter of Franklin and Melissa (Hatfield) Drake through their daughter Bessie Drake who married John William Retallick.

13 Feb 2010 email from Michelle Holmes:
"I have Melissa C. Hatfield Drake's bible. These photos were originally Grandmother Bessie's and then her daughter Kay's then to me. I believe that both of these as well as Franklin's were taken in Lebanon. I actually have a fairly large collection of these that I am digitalizing. Grandmother Bessie was very good about putting names on the photos "

Catherine Drake Retallick is the older girl on the right of the picture, her mother Bessie is immediately behind her, John W. Retallick is in the back row with Wm. F. Retallick on his shoulder. From the age of Wm. Retallick and the uniform on the man to the far right of the photo I would place it around 1918 or 1919.

SUDDEN DEATH OF BERT DRAKE IS SHOCK TO VILLAGE
Prominent Lebanon Man Was Victim of Heart Attack Saturday
HOLD LAST RITES
At Late Residence Tuesday Afternoon - Many Pay Final Tribute

Funeral services for Bert Drake who died during the night Friday, April 27, and was found in his bed Saturday morning by members of his family, were held Tuesday afternoon at the residence at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Frederick Kirker, minister of the First Presbyterian church of which Mr. Drake has been a member for many years, conducted the services.
Interment was made in Lebanon cemetery. Pallbears were C. F. Lewis, Wilds Gilchrist, J. A. Kilpatrick, Frank Anderson and C. C. Eulass.
Had Been Ill
Mr. Drake some weeks ago had suffered from an attack of the grip and altho he had recovered sufficiently to resume his work, he did not regain his strength. On Friday after an examination his physician advised him to confine himself to his home and remain in bed until his strength recuperated. He had planned to do this and had made arrangements for business at his establishment to continue in his absence. He retired as usual Friday evening. Death overcame him apparently without struggle for he was found dead from heart failure on Saturday morning by members of his family.
Mr. Drake was 55 years old, having been born October 18, 1872. He was the son of Frank and Melissa Drake, whose home was northeast of Lebanon about two miles. He attended the public schools at Genntown and then came to the National Normal University having graduated with the class of 1893.
He entered the coal and grain business, establishing a connection with the firm of Lewis Bros. For about 25 years he was with that firm which during that time became the firm known as Lewis & Drake, a partnership of C. E. Lewis and Mr. Drake. In 1926 Mr. Drake bought out the firm and formed a corporation known as Lewis & Drake, Inc.
Mr. Drake was a man of wide fraternal connections. He was a member of the various Masonic Bodies, the Blue Lodge, the Chapter and Commandery and had served in the various chairs of each of these organizations. He was also a member and past officer of the Eastern Star.
Was To Be Next President.
On Thursday of last week he was elected president of the Lebanon Rotary club, having been elevated from the office of vice president. He would have taken charge of his duties on July 1, the opening of the fiscal year of the club.
In 1925 Mr. Drake was president of the Lebanon Parent-Teachers Association and since the inception of that organization here he had been one of its most active and interested members. In the various civic organizations of the community he had a part and served with distinction because of his active interest in community welfare and progress.
In 1899 Mr. Drake and Miss Velma Booth were married. Six children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Drake, one daughter, Sarah Catherine, a teacher in Xenia high school, and three sons, Howard, a student at Ohio State University; Francis and Robert, both in high school.

1st Morris Family Reunion
ca. 1915-16

Michelle Holmes 18 Feb 2010 email:
I am working with some cousins on my Dad's side of the family that have Morris family from Mercer Co., Ohio to my Mother's Morris family in Warren Co. Maybe someone will recognize some of the people in these pictures and help us out with a connection. The pic labeled 1st Morris Reunion is likely taken at Elsie Morris' home. My mother remembers continuing to attend these reunions throughout her childhood in the 1940s. I think this picture was taken around 1915 or 16. Catherine Drake Retallick is in the front center. Bessie (Drake) Retallick is the 4th women standing from the right. John W. Retallick seems to be hidden somewhat behind Bessie.

This one is of the Retallick's I believe. I found this information on the ancestry message board for the man to the far right in the picture: "James A. W. Harney, who was born about 1852 in Muskingum county Ohio, and attended New Lexington School in Perry County, where it is believed he lived until he joined the army in 1875". The person putting up the posting was looking for his connect to the Retallicks. The women to his left is Katherine Drake (Retallick) Hillyer. I am unsure of the other's in the picture.

"Our Museum" by Hazel Spencer Phillips
The Western Star, Lebanon, Ohio, Thursday August 5, 1948
[The Warren County Historical Society has a collection of the
"Our Museum" articles published from 18 Sep 1947 to 28 Oct 1948 in a binder at their library - Call #977.176 Phi]

Historians of Warren County have written that Durbin Ward was the first volunteer of his county in the Civil War. When President Lincoln issued his call for Volunteers on Monday morning, April 15, 1861, Durbin Ward, a promising young attorney, was trying a case in the Warren County Court. He immediately drew up a paper pledging those who signed it to the service of his country, signed it, and proceeded with the case. We have often wondered what became of the paper thus signed and who the others were who, in the first fever of patriotism, followed down the list of volunteers.

Recently there has come to us a long paper containing the original roll of Volunteers for the 35th Regiment at Lebanon. Believing this list to be of considerable historic interest and values the names as signed, with penciled notations of rank, is now printed.
Original roll of Volunteers enlisted by Oliver H. Parshall for the 35th Regiment O. V. M. at Lebanon, on Sept. 4th, 1861:

1 - Oliver H. Parshall, Capt., 2 - Joseph H. Taylor, O. S., 3 - Thomas M. Harlan, 2nd Lieut., 4 - Thomas W. Rose, 1st Corporal, 5 - Jesse K. Randall, Corporal, 6 - Andrew J. Griffin, 7 - Webster Finley, 8 - John G. Koerner, 9 - George Mountjoy, 10 - Robert Holt, 11 - John Harris, 12 - David Mills, 13 - Sock Harlan, 2nd Corporal, 14 - James Whitesell, 15 - Samuel M. Denny, 4th Corporal, 16 - John G. Bennett, 17 - Wesley Randall, 18 - Horace McGinley, 19 - Nathan Schaeffer, 20 - David Smith, 21 - James Hartman, 22 - John W. Miller, 23 - Samuel Elmore, 24 - John Disbrow, 25 - Job Braddock, 26 - Edward R. Printz, 27 - William S. Keys, 28 - Milton Smith, 29 - John W. Dakin, 30 - Nathan Harvey, 31 - John W. White, 32 - William West, 33 - Fletcher Swaney, 34 - Joshua Crow, 35 - Bassel Leach, 36 - James Howland, 37 - Albert Howland, 38 - John Romaine, 39 - Edward Smith, 40 - Benjamin Campbell, 41 - William Owens, 42 - George Owens, 43 - Asa Owens, 44 - John Everhart, 45 - John Olvis, on Saturday, 46 - John W. Captain Parshall was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. His portrait, painted by the Quaker artist, Marcus Mote, was given to The Warren County State Museum by his granddaughter, Miss Helen Smith, and may be seen in the library there. A receipt made out to Mrs. Belle Parshall, his wife, for the sum of $10.00, for the portrait and the frame is signed by Marcus Mote, and may also be seen in our museum.
