    • Photo: John T. Hoban, "Wanda Stahley," obituary, Vista (Otterbein Retirement Living Communities, Lebanon, Ohio), Summer, 2002, p. 5-6.
". . . On July 17, 1957 Stahley began Officer Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFT), San Antonio, Texas. In Oct of 1957 Stahley became Women’s Air Force (WAF) squadron commander at Randolph AFB, in charge of the 300 WAFs living in the barracks.
In February 1959 she was transferred to Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany as the Dependent School’s Officer. There Stahley acted as liaison between the Wiesbaden and Copenhagen schools’ faculty and administration and the Air Force.
In 1962, Stahley transferred to Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, Louisiana, as Deputy Director of Administration. Her duties at Barksdale included production and distribution of the base’s news bulletin, receiving and distribution of all mail, storing and handling of all classified materials and scheduling all Officers of the Day.
In June of 1964, Stahley was named Chief of Administrative Services of Minute Man Missile Wing at the Grand Forks AFB, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Coming from Arkansas she was dismayed by the sights of snow drifting to the roof of her trailer home. After one siege of snow for five straight days, she sighed, “Even this too shall pass.”
“In education and within a religious setting, the individual has worth and merit,” Stahley reminisced as she looked back at her career. “But in a military setting, the primary goal is to accomplish the mission.”
In September 1966 Stahley journeyed to Torrejon AFB, Madrid, Spain where she became Deputy Director of Administrative Services. Feeling that her mission in the Air Force was coming to an end, she requested and received transfer to Blytheville AFB, Blytheville, Arkansas where she served as Maintenance Administrative Officer. She had come home to her native state of Arkansas. After eleven and a half years, Major Wanda gained her honorable discharge from the Air Force on January 31, 1969. . . ."
