The wound is doing well but he has taken the fever. Mr. Drake complains of the way they were brought from the Hospital at Savannah to Cincinnati: hundreds crowded together on deck, near the wheelhouse some groaning and some dying. He informs us that the trip on the boat was worse than the wound. . . ."

". . . On Jan. 11, 1865, the post of Beverly, garrisoned by the 34th, which by this time was reduced to 300 men present for duty, and the dismounted portion of the 8th Ohio cavalry, was attacked by the enemy. So secret and sudden was the attack - no alarm whatever being given until the enemy was in the quarters - that resistance was out of the question and nearly every man was at one time a prisoner, though subsequently a great many escaped, favored by the darkness and intense excitement of the occasion. The survivors of this most unfortunate and disgraceful affair were consolidated with the 36th Ohio, the union of the separate organizations dating from Feb. 22, 1865, and in which the old 34th lost its identity.

"In researching some of my Oberlin relatives, I came across Samuel F Dudley who was a son of Moses Dudley and Margaret Frybarger (or Friberger) presumably born in Warren County in 1834. On 18 Feb 1858 he married Nancy Ann Waggoner in Warren County. In the 1860 census they have two sons, George, age 1, and John, 3 months. Another son, Pliney H Dudley was born in Dec 1861, and is shown in the 1870 census with his mother who has remarried J. Milton Whitacre on 3 May 1866 in Warren County. Pliney H Dudley subsequently married Sarah Oberlin in Warren County in 1883.

"The body of Ferdinand Dugan, 81, Civil war veteran, was discovered partly burned in his home 4 miles north of Lebanon last Wednesday by neighbors who were attracted to the place by a blaze which was fast consuming his house. The man never regained consciousness, altho he lived for two hours afeter he was discovered.
Mr. Dugan served in the Civil war and was confined in the famous Libby prison for almost a year. He lived by himself and the origin of the conflagration leading to his death is a mystery.
Burial took place Saturday at the Kirby Graveyard. Captain Al Brant was the only old soldier present at the services, which is a striking indication that the veterans are rapidly fading out."

John Dunn, born in April 1826. In 1850 he was living with his mother, Elizabeth and sisters, Phebe and Martha in Union Twp. In 1860 he is still farming in Union Twp. He has four children, Thomas W., Amos, Phebe Elizabeth, and Martha, but his wife is not listed in the household (I suspect that the census taker just didn’t record Rachel). His sister Phebe is serving as a domestic servant in the household.
He enlisted on 5/2/1864 at age 38 and on 5/2/1864 he mustered into "F" Co. OH 146th Infantry as a Private. He was Mustered Out on 9/7/1864 at Camp Dennison, OH.
Following the Civil War John resumed his occupation of farming. In 1870, John, his wife Rachel A., his sister Phebe and eight children, Thomas W., Amos, Elizabeth, Martha E., George, Mary, William, and Morris, are living in Roachester. By 1880 the family had moved to Butlerville where John was employed as a laborer. By 1900 John was again farming, living in Hamilton Twp. with his son William and his daughter Elizabeth.
