I thought you might like to know the following information: Co G 11th Ohio Cavalry was deployed as follows: DATE LOCATION September 1863-April 1864 Fort Laramie May - October 1864 Deer Creek Station Deer Creek Station is located just east of present day Glenrock, Wyoming November 1864 -June 1865 Platte Bridge Station Platte Bridge Station is located at present day Casper, Wyoming July - August 1865 Sweetwater Station Sweetwater Station is located 45 miles SW of Casper."Long Mile" east of Independence Rock. September 1865-April 1866 Fort Laramie Due to the need for more troops, Lieut. Colonel William O Collins returned to Ohio early in 1863 to recruit more men for the 1st Independent Ohio Cavalry Battalion. He recruited 4 companies and replacements for the original 4 companies. These 8 companies were redesignated in September 1863 as the 11th Ohio Cavalry. One of the things not commonly known was that the ongoing Vicksburg and Gettysburg campaigns, had depleted the pool of available recruits. While LTC Collins was able to recruit a company (Co G) from Highland County, where he was from, there were few other recruits available. Many of the men in Company G had previously served in the 60th Ohio Infantry, which had been captured at Harper's Ferry, VA in September 1862. Because of the lack of available recruits, LTC Collins got creative in finding new recruits. Company E was made up of Union deserters being held at Camp Chase, Ohio. Company F was made up of CSA POW's held at Camp Chase, some of these men had served under Stonewall Jackson and had helped capture the 60th OVI and Harper's Ferry. These were not the only "Galvanized Yankees" that Company G would be associated with. The 11th OVC was deployed in small detachments at the various stage and telegraph stations. Serving alongside at various times were men of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th US Volunteer Infantry,. These regiments were made up of CSA POW's. In addition, Companys C and D, 5th US Vol Inf was made up of Union soldiers who enlisted in the CSA Army to escape Andersonville and were later captured.
