MRS. CATHERINE THOMPSON (deceased) and MR. THORNTON THOMPSON. THORNTON THOMPSON, of Butlerville, Ohio, was born December 6, 1826, near Ft. Ancient, Warren County, Ohio. He was the sixth son of Gilbert and Sarah Payne Thompson. His father emigrated to Warren County from Kentucky, about the year 1805. His mother was the second daughter of Coulson Thompson and Charity Smoot Payne, who were married in Farquer County, Virginia, and emigrated to Warren County, Ohio, in the year 1808, and settled near the mouth of Todd's Fork, on the Miami River, bringing with them their family of eight children. Our subject was married to Catharine Ann Hitesman, the eldest daughter of William Hitesman and Anna Snyder Hitesman who emigrated to Ohio from Easton, Pennsylvania in 1839, and settled near Maineville, Warren County, Ohio. Mr. Thompson and wife began house-keeping in Butlerville, Ohio, and he embarked in business as a contractor and builder. in July, 1862, he volunteered and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant of Company B, 79th O. V. I. During the term of his service he was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company D, 79th O. V. I. He was honorably discharged of December 15, 1864, on account of sickness, shortly after the siege of Atlanta, and returned to Butlerville, where he has since resided. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Thompson eight children, namely : George R., Anabelle, John H., Alice, Florence, William G., Carrie and Emerson F. Two of these, Anabelle and Carrie died in early life. Catharine, his wife died May 13, 1896. Mr. Thompson retired from active life about ten years ago. He has served Harlan Township in a number of official positions, having filled the offices of Treasurer, Assessor and that of Justice of the Peace for three successive terms. He served as Assistant Assessor of Internal Revenue in 1865-66, and Enumerator of Census in 1880, 1890 and 1900, for Harlan Township. He is now Postmaster at Butlerville. He is a vigorous and well preserved man, now in his seventy-eighth year, taking an active interest in local affairs. |
