STUDENTS & FACULTY

The school had about 80,000 graduates. The names of a small handful of them (as submitted by researchers or as posted elsewhere on the internet) are listed below. The list is slowly growing. If you would like to add your ancestor to this list, send an email to Arne H Trelvik with whatever information you might have about their attendance at the school. I'd be happy to include a photo and short bio if you have them.

  • H. N. Scoville - 1869-1871
    • from Marylou Denyer on 23 May 2009
"A couple of weeks ago my daughter and I visited the Historical Society in Lebanon, OH. We found a card file which contained students at the National Normal School of Lebanon. My great Grandfather, HN Scoville was listed there for 1869 and 1871. The attendant there found a box containing bulletins from the school including the 15th Anniversary Catalog of Teachers and Students. Mr. Scoville was listed in the Business Department for 1869, 1870 and 1871 as an undergraduate. I was told he did not graduate.
I found the site for the school online which lists the students in the 1870 census. Mr. Scoville does not appear there. He does appear on the 1870 census of Nashville, TN, living with the Truett family. I am curious as to why he might have left school in Ohio to go to Tennessee when he had no family there, and then return to Ohio the following year. He was married in 1872 in Nashville.
There is no picture available for Mr. Scoville. He was born in Dayton, OH, 26 Sep 1850, married Amanda Gibson in Nashville, and died 10 May 1884 at the age of 34 of an unknown cause. He was born out of wedlock and I have not been able to find his father"

  • John Milton Smith (1851-1918)
    • Email from Virginia McKinley Cossens dated 13 Feb 2012:
"My mother, Elma Smith McKinley, said her father, John Milton Smith, taught penmanship at Lebanon Normal. I know nothing more than this. She died in 1981 at the age of 95, and he died in 1918 at the age of 67. Mother and her sister must have been a source of deep disappointment to him since their handwriting was not good. Mother said that was because writing styles changed while they were learning, and they never mastered the finer points."
