STUDENTS & FACULTY

The school had about 80,000 graduates. The names of a small handful of them (as submitted by researchers or as posted elsewhere on the internet) are listed below. The list is slowly growing. If you would like to add your ancestor to this list, send an email to Arne H Trelvik with whatever information you might have about their attendance at the school. I'd be happy to include a photo and short bio if you have them.

  • Jacob Coleman Petty (1872-1928)
    • Biographical Sketch and Photo contributed by his granddaughter Marjory Petty Austen 25 Aug 2003
"Jacob Coleman PETTY, son of Josiah and Harriet COLEMAN PETTY, was born August 22, 1872 in the cabin which had been built by his Gr-Grandfather, Joseph PETTY, when he brought his family to the state of Ohio as Pioneers in 1808. Jacob was one of seven children helping their Mother on this same farm in Reading Tp. Southwest of Somerset in Perry Co, OH. His father, severely injured in the Civil War, was often taken to a large shade tree alongside one of the fields where he offered moral support to his wife and six surviving children until he died when Jacob was only seven. Jacob also learned building skills as part of a barn building team responsible for several barns in Perry County, some still standing today. He prepared to become an educator, and following his graduation from NNU about 1895, he taught one year at a one room school on the West side of Columbus Road northwest of Somerset. (name unknown)
On October 28, 1897, he married Keziah Belle MURDOCK, daughter of Archibald and Sara Matilda SHORT MURDOCK of Junction City, Perry Co. He and Belle, unable to raise a family on the salary of a teacher in the late 1800s, bought acreage on the County Line Road, south of Lancaster Road outside of Rushville, OH. They were the parents of three sons: Irvin, Lawrence, and Alva MAJORS PETTY, my father. He died in 1928. "
    • Probably the same as the J. C. Pettit listed as an undergraduate student in the Teachers College in the 1891-1892 catalog
