  • email from J Fred Olander IV dated 10 Jan 2011
    "I was doing a little research on my family and discovered my great grandfather went to the school. I can't find a photo of him but I have attached the source pdf I found with the info. His name was J Fred Olander. He went on to do a few locally high profile jobs and ran a publishing company, apparently becoming rather affluent."
    A pdf file on Hughes County, South Dakota contained the following:
    • "OLANDER, J. Fred, publisher; b. Greenbay, Wis., Oct. 6, 1871; s. Jonas and Mary C. (Olund) O.; ed. Grad. Natl’l. Normal U., Lebanon, Ohio, 1893; m. Grace E. Vermilya; ch. Royal Dwight, July 13, 1900; Theodore Edward, Sept. 21, 1906; Grace Rosalyn, May 5, 1913; Mary Faith, Febr. 13, 1915; J. Fred, Jr., Febr. 21, 1920. Co. Supt. of Schools, Brookings County, 1903-1907. Chairman South Dakota board of teachers examiners, 1907-10. Sec’y. S. D. Ed. Assn., 1903-1910. Publisher and editor, Stratford, Iowa, Courier, 1892-8. School book publisher,_ 1910-29. Repub. Meth. Mason (32, Shrine). Home: Pierre, now at home in Sioux Falls. He came to Hughes County on July 4, 1907."

  • Mary Owens Burgess (1846 - 1893) - 1874, Classical Course
    • from Beers History of Warren County, page 996,
      "Mrs. Mary Burgess is a graduate of the National Normal school, Lebanon, and was a successful and popular teacher for several years."
    • Obituary in the 4 May 1893 Western Star says,
      "She attended Shepardson College at Granville one term and then entered the National Normal University at Lebanon as pupil and teacher. Graduating in the classical course in 1874, with the highest honors she was made the valedictorian of her class. She was immediately elected a regular member of the faculty of that school and taught there most acceptably for two years. She resigned at the end of the second year because of failing health."
