STUDENTS & FACULTY

The school had about 80,000 graduates. The names of a small handful of them (as submitted by researchers or as posted elsewhere on the internet) are listed below. The list is slowly growing. If you would like to add your ancestor to this list, send an email to Arne H Trelvik with whatever information you might have about their attendance at the school. I'd be happy to include a photo and short bio if you have them.

Anyway, in your unknown photo list I saw what look like Morgan on 2B."

  • George Frederick Franz; Lebanon, Ohio (1881-1962)
    • 8 Mar 2008 Rod Franz writes,
" I have two Lebanon University diplomas belonging to my grandfather, George Frederick Franz. One is a Bachelor of Philosophy from the College of Science dated 6 August 1908. The other is a fancy Latin Bachelor of Arts dated August 1911.
I also have a group picture of the Tom Corwin Club. My grandfather, who must have been a club leader, is holding Corwin's portrait. They are a real serious looking bunch, perhaps a debating society.
George Frederick Franz was born in 1881 at Nine Mile, Clermont County, Ohio. He was the oldest of nine farm children, several of whom became educators. He first taught in a one-room school in Laurel, Ohio, in 1900, so was an experienced teacher when he attended Lebanon University. He continued on as a "school man" for sixty-two years. He was the principal of five different Cincinnati schools and was president of the Cincinnati Schoolmasters Club. He died at age 81 after umpiring a softball game at the private school where he was teaching part time. By any standard, he was a distinguished graduate of the university."

  • Anna Frye
    • S. Drew email dated 16 Sep 2016
" My relative Thomas Corwin Mendenhall (from Hanoverton, Ohio) says in his autobiographical notes that he graduated with the 1860 or 61 class. He also mentions another student, Miss Anna Frye, which I think was his girlfriend. She graduated the same year as him I believe.
He also mentions a favorite teacher of his, Mr W.D. Henkle and says he taught there from when it opened in 1855ish to around 1863. Henkle taught Mathematics courses at NNU— from Mendenhall’s notes it looks like he published a popular college textbook called "Henkle’s University Algebra” which was used around the country at that time. After resigning from NNU, Henkle went on to become the Ohio state school commissioner and write/publish the ‘Ohio Educational Monthly’ for about 15-20 years."
