      "After attending public schools in his home district and in Indianapolis, he received first-class collegiate training, at Franklin, Indiana,at DePauw University in Greencastle, and later at the Normal College in Lebanon, Ohio. He earned his college education. The first money toward that purpose was the proceeds from a field of wheat that he planted and tended to the harvest. Other funds to help him through college were obtained by teaching school."

    • "The education of John Edward Carpenter was rather limited in his youth, for his school advantages were poor and the best part of his training came after he had left home, first going to school during the summer months while teaching in the winter terms, and later attending the normal schools of Valparaiso and Ladoga, Indiana, and the Holbrook Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio.       "William Alkanzor Choguill is indebted to the public school system for his early educational privileges which were supplemented by study in the Hopedale Academy in Jefferson County, Ohio. Later he entered the Lebanon Normal School in Warren County, Ohio, where he completed his education and then served an apprenticeship in a drug store. Subsequently he matriculated in the Starling Medical College in Columbus, Ohio, in which institution he was graduated in 1870. After this he studied law with the firm of Stewart & Metcalf and was admitted to the bar in McConnellsville, Ohio, in 1879. Believing that there was a better field of labor offered to young men in the west where competition was not so great he started for Kansas, arriving in Humboldt on the fifth of March, 1880."

      "William Arthur Clark, psychologist, was born at Manchester, Ohio, May 23, 1853; son of Samuel Elison and Sarah Ann (Kirker) Clark, was educated at the National Normal University, Lebanon, Ohio, 1871-72 and 1883-85 receiving the degree A. B. 1885.
      “He was a teacher and superintendent of public schools in Ohio from 1872-81. Superintendent Ohio Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans Home School, Xenia, 1881-83; Professor of Mathematics National Normal University 1883-93; Professor of Philosophy Western Normal College, Lincoln, Nebr. 1894-95; Teacher of Pedogogy, Nebraska State Normal School, Peru, Nebr. 1905-12; and head professor of education and psychology in Missouri State Normal School since September, 1912.
      “He married Irene Holbrook at Lebanon, Ohio, July 28, 1886. He was the author of several workers [sic] on education.
      “After leaving Lebanon Prof. Clark attended Haward University where he received the degree of A. M. in 1899. He also received the degree of Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1900 and the degree of L. L. D. from Hasting’s College, Nebraska in 1912.”

    " My wife's great grandfather, Marion Erasmus Clodfelter (1844-1913), graduated from National Normal School in 1872. In 1873 he was elected the first Supt. of Schools for Montgomery Co., Indiana. He later became one of Montgomery County's most respected lawyers, unsuccessfully running for Congress in 1906 as a Democrat. I am working on a biography of his life. "

      "My husband's grandfather is a graduate from the Lebanon University on 8/11/1910 from the College of Philosophy. He also did course work at the College of Wooster & Univ. of Chicago and began teaching in a one-room school. After several years he became superintendent of schools at Garfield School district in Mahoning Co. and then returned to his birthplace, Millersburg, to assume the job of principal at Millersburg high school. At 26 he became the county school examiner for Holmes Co. and later the superintendent of schools in Wadsworth, Ohio (Medina Co.) from 1926 to 1946."

      "My Great-Great Aunt Tish (Letitia) Counts was born 1 Jun 1870 and attended National Normal University around 1892. I have the fan that her classmates signed, much like we sign yearbooks today. The dates on the fan are 1892 and there are several references to 108 Silver Street. I have her fan, her coverlet that was made on the loom at the family farm, and the camelback trunk she took to school. This family history stuff is just way too addictive! There's a picture on your site that asks if anyone knows the people in the picture. Could be that Aunt Tish is the gal on the left. Looks an awful lot like her."

      "Dr. John Oscar Creager, aged 70, president of National Normal University here from 1901-1907, and retired Cornell University president, died of a heart ailment Tuesday night at his home in Eldorado. A native of Preble county, he returned to his old home in September 1942, from New York City where he had lived since his retirement from Cornell. Dr. Creager also taught in Lebanon high school before going to N.N.U. . . ."

      "Rev. William Frost Crispin, son of William and Mary Ellen (Vankirk) Crispin, was born Nov. 14, 1833, near New Martinsburg, Fayette County, 0., being of English ancestry, the remotest known being Captain William Crispin of the British Navy, brother-in-law of Sir Admiral Penn, the American ancestors being Friends; with his parents he removed to Highland County when young; early education very limited and acquired in log schoolhouse; at majority borrowed money at ten per cent. to go to Ohio Wesleyan University one term, working for his father at $18 per month to pay off the note, then taught summer school in home district; next winter taught in Knox County, Ills.; returned to Ohio and chopt wood at 50 cents a cord to get money to go to National Normal University, Lebanon, 0., where by self-boarding [part of the time], and by teaching during winters, he received the Teachers’ Degree (I. J.) in 1860. After partly completing the senior course was called home on account of his father’s illness; later teaching, in all, about five years...." See PDF file
