The Oldest Shaker The oldest Shaker at Union Village in the person of Margaret Sawyer,
passed away Monday, March 20th, 1905. She was born in New York April 29th,
1817, and joined the North Union community (near Cleveland) in 1832. In
this community during a period of thirty years, she was an Office Sister.
In 1889 she was transferred to the Watervaleit Society. and to the North
Family, Union Village, in 1900. She
was of a cheerful and amiable disposition, and during her long life never
was the cause of complaint. She was devoted to the cause she had espoused
and led a blameless life. In old age she had the face of a chlid [sic],
which was almost wholly devoid of wrinkles. During her last sickness she
was peacefully resigned. and made no complaints to those who watched over
her. She was always respected and loved by those who knew her. |
