OBITUARY

NEWPORT. – James T. was born near Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, December 12, 1792, died August 2, 1873, of cholera morbus, after an illness of five days, being in his eighty-first year. He, with his parents, moved to Montgomery County, Ohio, in the year 1799, and settled on Mad River, near Dayton, and where Harshman’s Mills now are. About the year 1803 they removed to Warren County, near Lebanon, where he resided until his death. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, under General Harrison, in the company of Capt. Patrick Shaw, Lieut. Jacob Vance and Wm. Dill, served most of his time in the northern part of Ohio and Indiana, at Ft. Wayne and Fr. Defiance, was in the battle at Ft. Meigs, May 5, 1813, and several skirmishes with the Indians. He is supposed to be the last survivor of the company to which he belonged. January 26, 1814, he was united in marriage to Mary Corwin, who departed this life May 12, 1866, they had nine children, seven of whom survive them. He united himself with the Christian Church in the year 1839, and remained a zealous member until his death. In his last sickness he was never heard to murmur or complain, but bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and resignation, and while surrounded by many friends and all his children. He passed away without a struggle.
