BENJAMIN MULL, 93 SUCCUMBS TUESDAY
AT MIDDLETOWN
Was Native Of Turtlecreek Township In Warren County
AT DEDICATION
Of Methodist Episcopal Church At Lebanon In 1863
A long and useful life was brought to a close early Tuesday morning with
the death at Middletown of Benjamin
Mull, aged 93, native of this county who until the end retained a
keen interest in the affairs of Lebanon and surrounding community. A month
ago his many friends here were grieved to learn that he had suffered a
broken hip as a result of a fall at his daughter's home in Middletown.
Since that time he had been a patient in the Middletown Hospital and was
believed on the road to recovery until pneumonia developed last week resulting
in his death.
Funeral services will be held from the resident at 113 Monroe street,
Middletown, at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Ray L. Cross,
pastor of the Lebanon Methodist Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Armacost,
of the Middletown Methodist Church will have charge of the services.
Born in 1840
Benjamin Mull was born
in Turtlecreek Township near Lebanon January 29, 1840, the son of Reuben
and Catherine Spindler Mull, natives of Lancaster county, Pennsylvania,
who came to Ohio in 1835. His father was of Scotch ancestry. He was reared
on a large farm one mile northeast of Lebanon and the old colonial home
still stands.
In Civil War
At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Mull joined the "Squirrel Hunters"
for state service and afterwards volunteered for United States service
enlisting in Company A. Regiment
146. At the time of his death he was the oldest surviving Civil War
veteran residing in Middletown and one of the oldest veterans in southern
Ohio.
Married Warren County Girl
Following the war he was married to Miss Katherine Hathaway
on August 3, 1865, uniting two of Warren county's most prominent pioneer
families.
They were the parents of four children, Sarah L., who
died at the age of four years; Bert F. Mull, a retired
attorney of Los Angeles, California; Lula Pearl Hawthorne,
of Middletown; and Ernest C. Mull, who is associated
with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. Bertric Mull of California
is the only grandson.
Mr. Mull was one of nine children and had six brothers and two sisters.
One brother, Charles, aged 86, who had spent most of
his life in Dayton survives.
Wife Died in 1926
Mr. and Mrs. Mull were permitted to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary
in 1915. At that time they enjoyed a trip to the Atlantic coast cities
and visited his father's home in Pennsylvania.
In 1925 they celebrated their sixtieth anniversary at their county home
near Lebanon where they resided for 48 years. One year later, Mrs. Mull
died at the age of 82 years.
It was then that Mr. Mull retired from active life dividing his time with
his son in California and his daughter at Middletown.
Interested In Church
His great interest centered in the Methodist Church and particularly the
Methodist Church at Lebanon of which he had been a member for 76 years,
having joined the congregation in 1857 under the pastorate of the Rev.
Enoch West. He was at various times a class leader, teacher,
leader in prayer service and at the time of his death was an honorary
trustee of the church.
He is the last member who was present at the dedication of the Lebanon
church in 1863 and held the record both as to age and length of years
in membership. When unable to attend church during the closing period
of his life, he "listened in" each Sunday on radio sermons and
hymns.
Mr. Mull was possessed of a strong personality and was well known and
highly respected by a wide circle of friends. Among his outstanding characteristics,
his goodwill and hospitality among his fellow men.

Henry Mull
(1936-1930)
OBITUARY
Henry Mull
Henry, second son of Reuben and Catherine Mull, was born in Genntown
April 10, 1836 and passed away at his home near Lebanon July 7, 1930,
at the ripe old age of 94 years 2 months and 27 days.
He was married to Anna Rebecca Kersey June 4, 1868 and they began their
life together on the farm where he has since resided. Eight children were
born to this union, only three of them remaining to cherish his memory:
Mrs. Viola Bogan of near Lebanon, Miss Eunice who lives at home and has
been his faithful house keeper and watched over him during his last illness,
and Mrs. Helen McIntire of Detroit, Michigan. Also Mrs. Alma Mull, the
wife of a deceased son, has been all that a daughter could be to him in
her attentiveness and was of great assistance during his last sickness.
The wife died 17 years ago.
Beside the children he leaves five grandchildren and two brothers with
a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Mull has been almost a life long member of the Methodist church at
Lebanon, having united with it in 1856, some 74 years ago. He lived a
consistent Christian life and was highly respected by those within the
church as well as those without. His life was an open book and was lived
within its entirety among those who knew him best. He has written his
own obituary in the lives of those he knew. They both respect and honor
his memory. These fine sentiments which he has left behind in the hearts
of those who knew him make words of praise useless if not superfluous.
He was a patriotic citizen and loved his country passionately. During
the Civil War he enlisted
in the 79th regiment O. V. I. and served for three years when he was wounded
at the battle of Aversboro and received an honorable discharge. He fought
in many battles and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. As soldier
his comrades say he made a fine record. And best of all he has carried
this record into a long and useful life. He has continued to be a good
soldier to the very end.

Joseph Mull (1838-1919)
Joseph Mull was the fourth child of Reuben Mull and his wife. He was
born in Genntown, Ohio, February 9, 1838, and departed this life July
28, 1919, aged 81 years, 5 months and 19 days.
His parents migrated to Ohio from Pennsylvania several years prior to
his birth. They came overland by wagon and for two weeks after their arrival
in Warren County were the guests of Isaac Evans of the farm now occupied
by Mr. Geo. E. Young and his family.
Mr. Mull received his education in the public school at Genntown. At
the age of 19 years, February 5, 1857 he was received into full membership
in the Methodist Episcopal Church of Lebanon, Ohio by the Rev. Mr. Enock
G. West. Thus for a period of 62 years he has been a faithful follower
of the Lord Jesus Christ.
December 25, 1874 he was united in Holy Wedlock with Miss Ann E. Drake.
To this union one child, Stella, now Mrs. Sylvan Jameson, was born. Mrs.
Mull died September 27, 1914.
When the life of the nation was imperiled, Mr. Mull volunteered as a
soldier in the Civil War.
The deceased was always of a retiring, unassuming disposition preferring
the abiding and simple pleasures and comforts of the home above the passing
pleasures to be sought beyond the family circle. The past few years of
his life have years of illness and death came as a welcome messenger of
deliverance. During his prolonged illness his daughter, in her untiring
service has given abundant proof of her filial affection.
In addition to his daughter, Brother Mull is survived by two sisters
and four brothers, Mrs. Elizabeth Greathouse, Mrs.Mary Vinson, Henry Mull,
Benj. Mull, George Mull, Charles Mull, 3 grandchildren and a number of
nephews and nieces. Two other brothers, John and Isaac have preceded him
to the Great Beyond.
A large circle of friends extend to the sorrowing ones their heartfelt
sympathy and assure them of their prayers that the God of all comfort
may comfort them in their bereavement.
