Obituary Joseph Mentz was born in Germany, Jan. 1, 1840, and departed this life,
at Franklin, July 1, 1922, aged 82 years 6 months. When 3 years of age,
he came to this country and settled at Cincinnati. Orphaned as a tender
age, he was adopted by foster-parents and reared to manhood. On Feb. 11,
1864, he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Booker and for more than
50 years trod life’s pathway together. On March 25, 1920, his companion
was suddenly called home, which was a great shock to him, in his great
affliction with which he was burdened. He came with his family to Springboro,
in 1874, where he lived an industrious and upright life. For many years
he was the sexton of the church and many were the times he tolled its
be3ll for others passed on long ago and which today tolls his parting
knell. For the past year his sufferings were intense but he bore them
with great patience and without a murmur, even in his bed at night humming
hymns he so dearly loved. He has been tenderly cared for by a loving and
dutiful daughter and husband, who have left nothing undone for this comfort.
We cannot wish him back with his great suffering. He is at rest. God’s
will be done. Source: The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle,
