Obituary.
Middletown Signal

Elder John Martin. - - The genial face of Elder John Martin will be sadly missed from many homes in Middletown where he was always a welcome visitor. His body was committed to the grave on Tuesday last, in the presence of a large number of the Shaker community and outside friends. In the afternoon the neat church of the order was well filled in honor of the deceased, and the praise that was poured upon his memory by those who knew him longest and best was of a high order. He was born in the year 1804, and united with the Shaker community twenty years later, and succumbed to an attack of heart disease on Sunday, August 17. It would be no easy task to write an accurate analysis of such a character, that made itself felt for good during eighty years. He was a man of rare mental qualities, which his brethren recognized by placing him in positions of responsibility and trust from the lowest to the highest. He carried sunshine into every house, and never allowed his tongue to slander others. Under the most discouraging circumstances he manifested the grace of patience and submission, and always acted as a Christian, whose faith rested in God. May the healthful influence of his life lead us closer to Him who went about doing good.

[Elder Martin was well and favorably known in this community, and his loss will be deeply felt by the society at Union Village, where he had resided for many years, and where he had always been known as an honored and useful member. - Ed.]
