Dr.
Abraham Hon Iler (1820-1909)
ANGEL OF DEATH
Visits One of Butler County Grand Old Men.
The hour just after midnight witnessed the passing of one of Butler county's
oldest and most respected citizens, Dr. Abraham Iler, of Blue Ball. Loved
and respected by a wide circle of friends of three generations - a man
whose loss means much to the community.
He was born in Franklin township, this county on Christmas Day, 1820,
being the son of Jacob and Margaret (Deam) Iler. The
former of whom was born in Germany, the latter in New Jersey whence she
came to Ohio with her parents when a young girl.
The father died when very young leaving the boy to be brought up by his
mother and his maternal grandparents. He received such instruction as
the public schols [sic] then offered, and, when old enough, was bound
out to a blacksmith to learn the trade.
This, however, proved too onerous for his strength and his mind leaning
to a professional career, he returned to his studies in a select school
in Middletown, earning funds for this by teaching and farm work.
Then having determined to adopt the medical profession he studied under
a local preceptor and afterward attended Ohio Medical college, Cincinnati,
from which he was graduated in 1851. He immediately established himself
to practice at Blue Ball
where he has since maintained his home and built up a large and representative
practice in this section.
He was known to practically every person, young and old, in this
part of the county and his name is honored in the place where he so long
lived and labored. He also enjoyed a high place in the esteem and confidence
of his confreres [sic].
He withdrew from active practice in 1902, but those to whom he had been
family physician for so many years continued to call upon him for professional
service so that he never entirely laid aside the work that had claimed
so much of his life.
In the Civil War Dr. Iler
died effective service at the front having enlisted as surgeon in 1864
and serving until the close of the war.
His wife, who was Miss Margaret Carr
[sic Karr], died in 1866 and he is survived by one daughter
Mrs. Scott McClelland, who has presided for many years
over the home of her venerable father.
The funeral services will be held from the late residence of the deceased
on Friday at one o'clock. Rev. Dr. Charles E. Walker officiating. Burial
will be made in the Middletown
Cemetery.
