ATTEMPTS SUICIDE
AGED SHAKER DRAINS VIAL OF
LAUDANUM.
Charles Hammond Is at Death's
Door As the Result of Rash Act.
No Cause Known.
Charles Hammond, aged 83, a former Shaker but now living
a retired life in Lebanon, attempted to take his life by an overdose of
laudanum, in his rooms at the Decker boarding house on Broadway Monday
morning.
When he did not appear for dinner he was called and no answer being received
the door was forced and he was found in an unconscious condition on his
bed. Beside him lay an ounce bottle which had been emptied of the poison.
Physicians were summoned and his condition has been -most critical ever
since, death being hourly expected. Sunday he attempted to slash his throat
with a razor but was discovered by neighbors and desisted.
He left the Shakers in 1903 and lived with his daughters in Boston Mass.,
three years, returning to Lebanon where he has since lived. No cause can
be learned for the rash act
