Joseph E. Decker (1839-1911)

JOSIE DECKER
Answers the Summons of the Grim Reaper

Josie Decker, one of the most widely known characters in this vicinity, died suddenly of heart disease at his home in the country, south of town last Friday morning. He had been in apparent good health up to the very moment of his death and his passing away adds another to the long list of men who have died suddenly in this community. He was preparing to go blackberrying and was putting on his shoes when the silent messenger touched him lightly and he fell.
Josie Decker was 71 years of age though few of his many friends realized that he had passed the allotted three score years and ten. He was born at Monroe and had passed his entire life in this vicinity. He was a soldier in the Civil War being a volunteer in the 2nd O. V. I. and served with credit throughout the conflict. He was one of the three men who remained of his entire company and his death has reduced the ranks to but two, both of whom were present at his funeral.
He leaves a widow, one daughter and three grandchildren, who will miss his kindly presence. He was devoted to his little grandsons and they were much in his company. He was the substitute for his son-in-law, William Wright, the carrier on Rural Route e, and was therefore a familiar figure about the local postoffice and well liked by all the patrons on the route.
The funeral was held from the Christian church on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock and was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. H. J. Rhodes who paid eloquent tribute to the good fellowship of the deceased.
John Kell Post attended the funeral in a body and escorted their comrade to his last resting place in Woodhill cemetery.

Decker, whom she married in 1865, she removed to Franklin where she made her home with the only daughter, Mrs. Ocie May Wright.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Decker is survived by four grandchildren, Hugh Wright and Ralph J. Wright, of Middletown, LaVerne Wright and Louise Jeannette Wright, of Franklin, and four great-grandchildren.
