A Suicide

John Cooney, Shaker, committed suicide on Thursday evening, July 7th, by drowning in Shaker Pond, at Union Village. He had been suffering from a severe attack of asthma and rheumatism, and was as despondent as a person could be on the 4th of July. He told Cephus Holloway that he intended to commit suicide by drowning himself, and was persuaded not to do it. But his suffering was son intense that he thought death would be a relief. He was found in water eight feet deep and ten feet from shore, cold and stiff. He was 72 years of age, and joined the society of Shakers in 1850, and was considered a useful and upright man.

The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
