Charles W. Charlton (1847-1941) LAST WARREN COUNTY CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT LEBANON HOME Lebanon, April 7 - Charles W. Charlton, 93, Warren County's last Civil War veteran, died last Sunday at his home here. Services will be Tuesday at 1 P.M. at the Oswald Funeral Home. Burial will be in Second Creek Cemetery near Blanchester. Mr. Charlton was born on a farm near South Lebanon June 10, 1847. He entered the Civil War with his twin brother, John, in 1864 and served 11 months. He passed much of that time in Tennessee where he captured a Confederate spy single-handed. He was married twice, the first time to Nancy Smith, in 1866, and the second to Josephine Lee in 1887. His second wife died in 1918. He passed most of his life farming. He is survived by a daughter, Alice, and nine sons, Emery, Alva, Alonzo, Andrew, Samuel, John, Lee, Walter and Delmar. Source: The Middletown Journal, Middletown, Ohio, Monday April 7, 1941 |
