ELDER MATTHEW CARTER.
DEATH OF ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST HIGHLY RESPECTED MEMBERS OF THE SHAKER COMMUNITY.

Special to tile Gazette:

UNION VILLAGE, July 24. - Elder Matthew Bailey Carter deceased this evening at 8:40 o'clock after an illness of five days. He seemed unconscious from the first day till his death; not noticing any one or speaking with any coherence. The deceased was born March 1826, and was a little over sixty-four years of age.

He united with the believers at Whitewater society, in Hamilton county, on June 1, 1844. He was called to places of care and responsibility soon after he united and for forty-six years has constantly filled some important office of trust, with the most scrupulous honesty and fidelity, faithfulness and integrity. About nine years ago he was called to stand first, in the ministry, which office he occupied at his death. During all his public career he was never known to do a single act dishonorable to himself or prejudicial to the society; and we are not aware of his having an enemy on earth. Of such we may safely say in the language of the inspired leader of the thousands of Israel "The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms." O. C. HAMPTON.
