James Ellsworth Benham (1861-1925)

RAILROAD MAN SUCCUMBS IN PORTLAND, OREGON.
The following article taken from the Portland oregonian, tells of the death of Ellsworth Benham, former auditor of Warren county:
"Ellsworth Benham, for many years assistant general tax agent for the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation company in Portland and a prominent figure in western railroad development, died of heart disease while addressing the speakers' class of the Rotary club last night in the Benson hotel. Death came suddenly as Mr. Benham was relating an anecdote of his early experiences.
Mr. Benham, whose home was at 372 North Thirty-second street, was at one time a leader in republican politics in Ohio. He was a graduate in engineering and law and engaged in the latter practice for a time. Upon coming to Oregon he was affiliated witth the Union Pacific system in the right-of-way department.
Ellsworth Benham was both active and well known in local and northwest affairs. He was a Shriner, a prominent Rotarian and was closely affiliated with the Transportation club for a number of years. He is survived by his widow and a small son.

FORMER AUDITOR DIES IN PORTLAND OREGON.
Ellsworth Benham, aged 64, former auditor of Warren county died suddenly at his home in Portland, Oregon, Tuesday night according to word received here Wednesday by his brother P. P. Benham, of south of Lebanon. The deceased went west many years ago when he was employed as a tax accountant for the Harriman Railroad. He had risen to a place of great responsibility and had a large corps of men under im [sic] in the tax department of the Harriman Railroad interests. He visited his brother here last summer and renewed old acquaintances. He is survived by his widow and several children besides the brother here.
