The following article was found in the Western Star Newspaper, September 30, 1853, roll #7. It was the fourth annual fair held September 14th – 15th, 1853, at the fair grounds located north of Lebanon, Ohio.

Not much is written in early history about the women of our community, but in the following article we get a glimpse of the many crafts and flowers that were exhibited by them at the fair

A note of interest on the prizes awarded. The average income for these farmers was about $250 per year so these prizes must have been well worth the effort of coming to the Warren County Fair.

On account of bad weather and the consequent unsuitableness of the ground, the Board failed to procure ground for the Plowing Matches, five entries.

PLOWS – seven entries

FARMING IMPLEMENTS MADE IN COUNTY – fifteen entries

1. Farm Wagon complete, No. 118, George R. March & Bro., diploma, $5.
2. Two horse Pleasure Carriage, No. 118, Geo. R. March & Bro., diploma.
3. Best Buggy, No. 118, Geo. R. March and Bro., diploma and $5
The committee recommended a premium on a Rockaway Carriage or Buggy enterred for commmpetiooon with the buggy above named….Said committee decided that it belonged to a different class of vehicles and could not therefore compete with it, but recommended a premium therefore which the board awarded $5. (H. Simonton & Bro.)
4. Threshing Machine, made by Pitts & Co., Springfield, exhibited by John Simmins,
diploma.
5. Force Pump for Well and Cistern, Linton & Miles, Mainville, diploma.

There was a fine display of excellent Butter and great difficulty was experienced by the committee in deciding between the lots.
1. First premium, Mrs. Robert Wilson, half a dozen teaspoons, $6.
2. Second, Mrs. Ellison Snook, pair of silver sugar tongs, $3.
3. Third, Mrs. Joshua Irons, pair of butter knives, $2.
4. Fourth, Mrs. Cynthia Irons, premium, $1.
5. Cheese – for two exhibited by Peter Lefever, diploma.

HONEY – eight entries

1. Best, Wm. Maple, diploma and $1.
2. Second, Joseph J. Reed, diploma.

In first class of manufactured articles, nothing was entered under the premium list published.

4. Best Monochromatic Painting (finely executed} Miss Amanda Day, diploma and $1.
5. Best Daguerreotypes, (fine specimens) H. B. Vanneman, diploma, $1.

good preservation, which the committee deemed worthy of notice.

REPORT OF FLORAL COMMITTEE

1. Mrs. William Richey, greatest and best varieties of Cut Flowers.

DAHLIAS

1. Mrs. R. G. Corwin, best six dissimilar blooms.
2. Henry Venable, Best Seedlings.
3. Mrs. H. M. Stokes, placed on the stand a great variety of the finest Dahlias, which were not entered for premium. They without a doubt would have taken premium for the greatest and best variety, also for twelve dissimilar blooms. They were tastefully arranged on a stand.

ROSES

1. Mrs. Wm. Richey, Greatest Variety and best six dissimilar blooms.

PHLOX

1. Mrs. Wm. Richey, Best six varieties.

VERBENAS

1. Mrs. Wm. Richey, greatest variety, there being some sixty varieties. Ditto, best twelve varieties, ditto, best seedlings, embracing fifty varieties, ditto, best pair of hand bouquets, round.
2. Miss Sarah Ross, contributed to the Floral Display, a beautifully arranged hand
bouquet, for which the committee recommended a premium.

GERMAN ASTER

1. Mrs. Wm. Richey, best collection.
2. Mrs. Wm. Richey, best and most tastefully arranged Floral Stand or design of Cut Flowers, premium, $5.
** Little Harry Stokes, contributed a most beautiful and singularly appearing Cactus
which attracted much attention; discretionary premium recommended.

The committee would respectfully remark that the know of no town of it’s size that can present a better and greater variety of Green House Plants than Lebanon, which in consequence of the inclemency of the weather, were not brought to the stand. These would have added greatly to the Floral Department.

The committee awarded the premium to the various persons as above arranged in pursuance of the published rules of the association.
