TOO MUCH SINGING And Not Enough Preaching, Says an Old Fashioned Christian. Last Sunday at one of our churches, after an earnest sermon, the preacher gave out the last hymn and invited any who felt moved in spirit to come forward during the singing and unite with the church. Nobody did so, and as the congregation passed out this conversation was heard: "Seems that with all our church work but few are converted." "Yes,"' responded a pious oldtimer who was addressed, "that is so. Something Is wrong. If they would get right down to business like we used to see they would do better. There iIs now too much singing, and too much time wasted. They ought to get right down to preaching, and preach from start to finish. That would fetch 'em. Why, if Uncle Richard Simonton could get into a meeting like this was to-day and preach as he used to do, sinners would be converted by the score." "And who was Uncle Richard Simonton?" asked a listener. "Oh, he was a strong man about here long ago. He was the father of the late John Simonton." Opinions will differ. |
