Whitacre Farm Cemetery
Salem Township, Warren County, Ohio

The Whitacre Farm cemetery probably was a private, family burying ground from the mid 1800s, containing tombstones dating from 1849 to 1875. The locations was on the 157 acre farm of Benjamin F. Whitacre on both the 1856 Wall Map and the 1867 Wall Map of Warren County. The 1875 Warren County Atlas shows the cemetery location was on the 117 acre farm of S. & C. Whitacre. The 1891 Atlas and the 1903 Atlas both have the location on a 135 acre farm of Chas. G. Whitacre. The 1932 Warren County Plat book shows the location on the 130 acre farm of C. G. Whitacre. None of these maps had anything on them to indicate that a cemetery was present at this site.

Little publicly available documentation has been found regarding the cemetery or who was buried there. The depression era W.P.A. Graves Registration Project documented the cemetery with a plat showing 2 rows of 4 graves but showed only one of the three Civil War soldiers buried there (Elijah Beeman). In 1956 and 1957 James E. Stubbs visited the cemetery and recorded the inscriptions of 12 tombstones visible at that time. The cemetery had not been included in any of the cemetery publications done by either the D.A.R. or the Warren County Genealogical Society although the Stubbs data was later added as an addendum to Warren County Cemetery Records, Volume 7.

Starting in April of 2006, Laurie and Darren Waters of the Landon area, volunteered to photograph tombstones for the Warren County Genealogical Society in conjunction with the society's efforts to obtain digital photographs of all extant tombstones in Warren County. Since Laurie is a descendant of the Whitacre family, they volunteered to do this cemetery. After much time riding around the countryside querying anyone they could find, they finally located the cemetery on private property situated a beautiful bluff overlooking the Todd's Fork valley. With the enthusiastic consent of the property owners they visited the location of the cemetery and found practically nothing but heavy pasture grass and scant evidence of no more the 1 or 2 partially buried stones. Undeterred, they jumped in with line trimmers, probes, shovels and brushes and uncovered many more graves than were previously known to be here, all of them appear to be the extended family of Whitacres who lived on or near the burial site. The results of their efforts will be included in a 2nd edition of Warren County Cemetery Records, Volume 7 We thank them for also sharing their efforts with the Warren County OHGenWeb project.

  • 11 Sep 2009 email from Judy Davison:
"I found the obituary of my 2nd great-grandfather Jonas Whitacre, in 1871 Warren County Ohio Obituaries, page 22. This sentence in the obit: "He was buried Saturday afternoon, May 13th, in Whitacre's burying-ground" makes me think he is in Whitacre Farm Cemetery, although he is not listed there yet on your website. Jonas was the son of Benjamin, on whose land this cemetery was located. Jonas' sister Abigail Stubbs is buried there, and I am wondering if this information is sufficient to have him added to the list of burials there on your website."

on 27 Apr 2006, Judy Davison writes,
"Abigail Whitacre Stubbs (wife of Samuel) was one of only three known children of Benjamin Whitacre. I am descended from her brother Jonas and his wife Nancy Baldwin, daughter of Hiram - and sister of Lurinda Baldwin Platt (spelled Lewranda in court documents I recently found in Dearborn Co IN, which is where Hiram Baldwin's widow went, with several of the children, after Hiram's death ca 1836 or shortly before. One more of these Baldwin sisters was Rebecca, the wife of George Whitacre who was, I believe, a son of Enoch.
I have done a lot of research on the descendants of Hiram and Mary Louisa (Lewis) Baldwin, and those of Jonas and Nancy (Baldwin) Whitacre. Would be happy to hear from other descendants."
