Shawhan Cemetery |
|
Entrance |
|
This is a small inactive cemetery. Warren County property records shows the cemetery with about 190' of frontage and ranging from 128 to 139 feet deep - a little over 1/2 acre. It appears that the grass is being cut but most of the stones are in poor condition. Brush growth on the perimeter has overtaken some of the stones.
1856 and 1867 maps of Warren County show this cemetery on a 170 acre parcel of land owned by John Shawhan. John obtained 36 acres in 1825 from the estate of his father, Darby Shawhan. In the same year he purchased 100 acres from Thomas Watson and added 35 more acres in 1829 which he purchased from Gilman Greely. John Shawhan died in 1869 and is buried in the cemetery along with with wife, Rebecca (Leggett) Shawhan who died in 1841 and 3 of their children; Rebecca Shawhan who died in 1834, Nancy Shawhan who died in 1845 and Perry Shawhan who died in 1873.
In 1871, 93.63 acres were sold in a Sheriff's sale by the heirs of John Shawhan to a William Phillips with the property then changing hands a number of times between 1871 to 1875 passing to Christian B. Odell, Frederick F. Stevens, Wilhelm Adams and finally to Michael Humbert who purchased the property in 1875 and held it until 1896 when the property was sold to Edward F. Fuller in a sheriff's sale.
The next transaction found in the Warren County Recorder's office occurred in 1917 when Lucie L. Clement sold the property to Emanuel Landacre. The deed recorded on page 311 of Deed Book 102 indicates that the sale involved the property of Edward F. Fuller which was devised to his wife, Lucinda S. Fuller & inherited by Lucie L. Clement [wife of John B. Clement], their only child, "excepting therefrom 54/100 acres heretofore sold to Salem Township".

FOOTNOTES:
Email Arne H Trelvik if you would
like to add any comments regarding this cemetery or those who are buried there.
8 November 2004 | The Warren County Genealogical Society records also list a Mary J. Carroll and a Charles Carroll, both of whom died in 1858. No tombstones were found for them at the time of the 2004 visit. |
21 November 2004 |
Thanks to Ron Miller from Wisconsin who stopped at the cemetery to clean off some of the stones. Ron is a Carroll family descendant and pointed the way to the tombstones for Mary J. Carroll and Charles Carroll which were hidden in the brush. Photos are now included. |
21 & 30 Nov 2004 | Bob Ireland indicates that he is a descendant of Francis Ireland who married Ruth Coddington and was a brother of J. B. Ireland. The transcription of the John C. Ireland marker comes from Ron Miller by way of Bob Ireland. Ron got the transcription from a listing at the Warren County Historical Society. The marker was apparently also seen by Craig Martin Weaver in 1965 or 1966 as he noted it in his manuscript that was published in 1966. Cheryl Jordan was not able to find the John C. Ireland stone in 2004 and indicates there is a base of a broken stone near the J. B. Ireland stone. |
26 Jan 2005 | Ron Miller writes about Daniel
Carroll Sr., " When I visited, I noted that his tombstone said he died on March 7, 1827. However, his probate records, including the inventory of his estate, took place in April 1826. I strongly believe that he died on March 7, 1826. The style of his tombstone makes me think it was put there many years after his death, probably by one of his sons, and they got the wrong year." |
30 May 2005 | Bob Ireland writes, " was out at Landaker this morning and someone has found the stone of John C. Ireland and placed it next to James Benton Ireland’s marker. A couple pictures are attached. Also, James Benton Ireland and John C. Ireland as well as my gg grandfather Francis were sons of Thomas J. Ireland and Hannah Creamer Miranda Ireland who are buried at Morrow" |
