Warren County, Ohio Virtual Cemetery Project
Catholic Cemetery, Salem Township
[St. Malachy Parish]

on 23 Apr 2006 [email protected] provided the following brief history:
"During one of the greatest expansions of our country, William Clement built the Little Miami Railroad in Ohio for the westward pushes of European immigrants during the 1840's. Many people in this western expansion were Roman Catholic. Mr. Clement laid out a new town in 1844 named Morrow. It was named for the seventh governor of Ohio and the president of the Little Miami Railroad Company. He was also a resident of Foster's Crossing. William Clement donated a certain section of land within Morrow so the Catholics might have their own church.

It should be noted that William Clement was not a Catholic.

St. Malachy Parish was founded in 1849. St. Malachy Church was erected in 1854 at the cost of $2,000. In 1866 the belfry and the tower were added at an approximate cost of $3,000. The 400 pound bell was hung in the belfry as a gift made possible by the section hands. St. Malachy was the first Catholic Church in Warren County and consisted of approximately forty families.

The early pastors of St. Phillips continued expansion of the faith by establishing St. John Mission Church in Fosters, St. Francis de Sales in Lebanon, and St. Augustin in Waynesville.

St. Malachy continued to serve until July, 1965. At this time both St. John and St. Malachy were united into the present St. Philip the Apostle Church. The building still stands next to the Morrow Elementary School. In recent years it housed an antiques store and is now empty and on the real estate market."

Location:
The Catholic Cemetery is located 1 mile south of Morrow on the east side of Morrow-Woodville Road.
[This is not the same as the Shawhan [aka Landaker] Cemetery which is further south on Morrow-Woodville Rd between First Creek and Geihls-Carroll Road]

    • Cheryl Jordan visted the cemetery in 2004/2005 and photographed all extant tombstone at the cemetery which are included below.
    • Cheryl Jordan revisted the cemetery in Feb. & Mar 2007 and took additional photos. Cheryl tells us that much restoration work has been done at the cemetery, uprighting toppled stones, etc.. An article published in the Cincinnati Enquirer on 17 Nov 2007 indicates that the work was done as an Eagle Scout project by Matthew Burkert of Fairfield Twp, Butler County The article, contributed by Sue Kiesewetter, said "By the time they were done the volunteers had cleaned 110 gravestones, retrieved stones from an old creek bed and others buried, rebuilt 50 markers and realigned 20 bases."

Mary Gruber
born Sep. 6, 1855
died May 24, 1876

on 10 Mar 2006, [email protected] writes,
" Mary Gruber buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Salem Township on Morrow-Woodville Road (the old St. Malachy Parish) is the daughter of Peter Gruber and Suzanna Schuler. As the marker indicates, Mary Gruber was born Sep. 6, 1855 and died May 24, 1876. She died of tuberculosis (consumption) at 20 years of age.

Mary Gruber’s father Peter Gruber was born 1827 in Furbough, Germany and her mother Suzanna Schuler was born in 1831 in Alsah, France.

Mary Gruber’s brother, Francis Charles Gruber (1867-1960) lived in Foster, Ohio near the Little Miami River and made the bricks and helped build St. John’s Catholic Church in Foster. Frank is buried at Hopkinsville Cemetery."

Missing Stones
Following is a listing of burials recorded in Warren County Cemetery Records Vol 7 that was based on visits to the cemetery in the mid 1980s that were not found when Cheryl Jordan photographed the cemetery in 2004/2005 or in 2007. Jim Kennedy has heard that a number of stones from the cemetery are now down at the bottom of the hill/cliff? by First Creek. If anyone has photos of any of these stones, please consider sharing them with us.
