"I think there may be an error regarding Amos Compton, son of Samuel and Elizabeth, died 9-14-1824...I think it should be 1821...According to Hinshaw, Amos was born 7-9-1770...using the 1824 death year puts his birth year at 1773...It really could be construed as either a 1 or a 4...but since the research has already been done and we already have a birth date.

Charity Cook
died 13 of 11 Mo. 1822
aged 76 years 11 months 11 days
Warren County Cemetery Records Volume 7 has: "d. 13 of 11th mo, 1832; wife of Isaac and dau. of Thomas & Rachel Lewis which is thought to be incorrect - see below"
Jean LaGue of Westerville, Ohio, provides the following commentary:
Thu, Mar 27, 2008
I believe that my husband's ancestor, Charity Cook is buried there d 1822. She & her husband Isaac had transferred to Silver Crk IN (there is an Isaac Cook who died in 1820 on your list for CCrk--not sure if this is him, or someone else). Charity was a Quaker minister, and traveled extensively throughout her life.

Silver Creek MM Union Co, IN
Extracts from Abstracts of the records of the Society of Friends in IN, edited by Williard Heiss, Indy, 1962
Isaac Cook d 15 Jan 1820 78 yrs bur Silver Creek
(died of cancer per “Charity Cook A liberated woman” by Algie Newlin 1981 p 114)
Charity Cook died 13 Nov 1822 @ 77y bur Silver Creek

Yet Caesar's Creek MM also records her death:
Charity Cook 11 mo 13 1822 77 yr 9mos buried at Caesar's Creek Meeting House
Isaac Cook-11mo 13 1820 late residence ____ ___, verge of Silver Creek Monthly Meeting state of Indiana (month and day are wrong, probably written the same time as Charity's and the same mo and day as hers was in error)

In Mar 1820, Charity was granted a certificate to visit all the subordinate meetings in New Garden MM, Indiana
June 1820 She completed her tour and was granted a certificate to be returned to Caesar's Creek, where two of her daughters lived.
July 1820 she was granted a certificate from C Crk to visit meetings in Baltimore & Philadelphia
Dec 1820 certificate returned to Caesar's Crk
(Above info from “Charity Cook A liberated woman” by Algie Newlin 1981 p 116-118
no evidence that she returned to Silver Creek

Thu, Mar 27, 2008
I think the date and information on your website is in error. You currently have that she died in 1832, when she died in 1822, Also she is not the daughter of Rachel and Thomas Lewis. Charity and Issac Cook had a daughter named Rachel Cook who married Thomas Lewis. Charity is the daughter of John Wright and Rachel Wells Wright. I also just realized that Ruth Cook Furnas, wife of John Furnas is also buried in C Crk Cemetery. Ruth Cook Furnas is a daughter of Charity Wright Cook and Isaac Cook. I'll probably have to make another trip sometime this summer to get some more photos.

Sun, Mar 30, 2008
I think that I've discovered the source of the error about Charity Cook's parents. From Hinshaw Vol 5 p 162:

1813, 9, 30 (Cook) Isaac, s Thomas & Mary, Clinton Co., O., d 1820, 11, 13 ae 77 bur Caesar's Creek; m Charity Lewis, dt Thomas & Rachel, Clinton Co., O., d 1822, 11,13 ae 77 bur Caesar's Creek.

I have no doubt that some Isaac Cook married Charity Lewis on that date, but it was not the Isaac who died in 1820, nor the Charity Wright Cook who died in 1822
Isaac died in Silver Creek, Indiana 15 Jan 1820 (his parents were Thomas & Mary)
Charity Wright Cook died 13 Nov 1822 & is bur in Caesar's Creek
This couple married ca 1762 in Newberry County, SC, and had about 11 children, all born there. One daughter was Rachel Cook, who married Thomas Lewis. Charity Lewis, daughter of Rachel Cook & Thomas Lewis, was the grand daughter of Isaac (d 1820) & Charity Wright Cook (d 1822)

This is further supported by this entry from "Charity Cook, a Liberated Woman" by Algie Newman, p 110 & 111
"One of the complications which the genealogist or biographer meets in the study of Isaac & Charity while they were at Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting is the duplication of the names, "Isaac" and "Charity Cook," in the membership of the Caesar's Creek MM. While they were there, at least six Friends of that meeting, ranging in age from childhood to advanced years, named "Isaac Cook" were members of that meeting. For a few years, two married couples with the identical names of "Isaac and Charity Cook" were members of the meeting...We find that the younger Isaac was a nephew of the older and his wife Charity was a granddaughter of the older Isaac. The younger Charity may be designated as Charity Lewis Cook and the older as Charity Wright Cook... (grand daughter & grandmother)

17 Sep 2013 commentary by David Mills of Red Lion, Ohio
I'm writing you about Charity Cook wife of Isaac Cook, both bur in Creasers Creek Friend Burial Ground. I have been trying to confirm the location of Isaac and Charity (the Isaac, that is the son of Thomas Cook and Mary Mills, my line) for some time. In order to accomplish this, one must research all of the Isaac's and Charity's....and there are many, many of them. I found a lot of research notes on Charity Wright Cook. All is correct information. But was not matched with the proper people, Isaac and Charity.

Several things are clear:

  • Isaac Cook (b. abt 1743), son of Thomas Cook & Mary Underwood (5th child), from Crane Creek MM, Alamance Co., NC, Hinshaw, Vol-I, p369,
  • Isaac married Charity Wright (b. 13 Nov 1745), dau of John Wright & Rachel Well, also Crane Creek MM.
  • No marriage date found, but the birth of 10 children is recorded, 1st child, Joseph Cook b. 23 Dec 1763.
  • On 26 Oct 1805 , Isaac and wife were granted a certificate to remove to Miami MM, (Waynesville area) Isaac was 62 and Charity was 60.
  • On 9 Jan 1806 Isaac & wife Charity were received in Miami MM on a certificate dated 26 Oct 1805.
  • On 13 Nov 1820 Isaac died and was buried in Creasers Creek FBG, at age 77. Birth date not found, but parents married 1730, and had 8 children from 1731 to 1751.
  • On 13 Nov 1822 Charity died and was buried in Creasers Creek FBG, at age 77. Birth date confirmed, Crane Creek MM, Alamance Co., NC, Hinshaw, Vol-I, p369
  • Isaac Cook (b.1791) son of Thomas Cook & Mary Mills (Thomas bro of Isaac, b. 1743), married Charity Lewis at Creasers Creek MM, and moved to IN, IL & IA. Hinshaw has confused these two couples, as they were not 77, or were they buried in Creasers Creek FBG.
  • There at least 5 Isaac Cook's in the Creasers Creek MM, over about a 25 year period. There is only one couple that could have been 77 in 1820 and 1822 when they died.

I'm not requesting you to make any changes, I just wanted to share the research that I had done in confirming Thomas Cook (b. 1751) and Mary Mills (b. 1749) and their descendants .
