  • The cemetery at these coordinates is referred to as "Unnamed" #12245 in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003".
This O.G.S book also has a cemetery named Butterworth-Foster #12232 "located 3 miles south of Maineville. South side of Foster-Maineville Road. On Sibey Road OHI: WAR046811" [Our volunteers have not found a cemetery on Foster-Maineville Rd at Sibcy Rd.]

Bud Blum has acquired a transcription of an excerpt from the diary of Clarkson Butterworth dated Tuesday, November 7, 1893 in which he describes his visit to the cemetery for the funeral of his uncle Henry T. Butterworth. He then goes on to describe the cemetery and those buried there. [Clarkson was then living in Clinton County]

Rachel and I went to Butterworth’s and attended the funeral of uncle H. T. Butterworth. The remains were interred at the feet of his father’s remains on the hill overlooking his late and long continued residence. Here is a rough diagram of several of the graves there with all their heads toward the west.

-------- 1. uncle John Dyer
-------- 2. cousin William Dyer
-------- 3.}
-------- 4.} Aunt Milly Dyer and her two children, Mary (or Polly)
-------- 5.} and Benjamin
-------- 6. grandfather Benjamin Butterworth
-------- 7. grandmother Rachel Butterworth
-------- 8. my father, Moorman Butterworth
-------- 9. Aunt Nancy Ballard
-------- 10. uncle Henry Thomas Butterworth

In a row west of these are graves of uncle H. T.’s two little sons, Moorman and Henry Thomas, and other children, relatives. The grave of my brother Thomas, whose exact locality is not now known is still a little further west, with some other graves near it and about 8 or 10 rods further west on the point of the hill are other graves also, including a daughter of Uncle Samuel Butterworth. The grave of uncle William’s daughter Leonisa (Leouisa?) is probably near that of my brother Thomas.

After the funeral Rachel rode home with cousin J. M. Dyer, whither I followed on foot. Our tickets to Fosters and return cost $3.20 and we paid 20¢ more to go from Fosters to Butterworth. Seth Ellis had partial charge of ceremonies at the funeral, cousin Rachel Hadley spoke 40 minutes, and Emma Danforth, uncle H. T.’s daughter, read an obituary, embracing with other things, essentially the matter I prepared, or helped uncle prepare and arrange (see 1889,7.23). At the grave Rachel Hadley prayed and Seth Ellis pronounced a benediction.

The 7 Nov 1893 entry in the Clarkson Butterworth diary indicates that his grandfather, Benjamin Butterworth and his wife Rachel [Moorman] are buried here. This would be the Benjamin Butterworth (1766-1833) who immigrated to Warren County in 1812 as indicated in the biographical sketch of his son, William Butterworth, and the original Butterworth owner of the land on which the cemetery is located.

Early Vital Records Volume 8, page 53 by the D.A.R. Turtlecreek Chapter & Warren County Historical Society lists a Benjamin Butterworth & a Benjamin Butterworth, son of Moorman Butterworth [although they probably meant son of Henry T. Butterworth].

8 Sep 2009 Ann Senefeld email points out that this could also have been the footstone for Benjamin and Rachel’s son Benjamin? "

A number of field stones and other illegible stones were found at the cemetery by Larry W. Collins & Bud Blum as shown in the photos below.
#31 #32 #34 #35 #36
8 Sep 2009 Ann Senefeld email
"#36 looks like it says “RB” for Rachel Butterworth or possibly “BB” for the first Benjamin Butterworth."
#37 #38 #40 #41 #42
#43 #44 #46 #47 #48
Unsure if the last 3 are old headstones or not. Note the tree has grown around #48
