Eliza . . . 26 Dec 2016 email from Patti Graman-Hanaghan thought to be Elizabeth Newkirk wife of A. C. Newkirk died Sept. 27, 1863 [not sure of the date] aged 76 years "Bio on Elizabeth: She is Elizabeth Skinner Taylor Newkirk, daughter of Cornelius (who is buried in Skinner Family Cemetery in Loudoun Co. VA) and Sarah McMakin Skinner, who is buried at Union Church Cemetery, Warren Co., OH. Elizabeth was b 18 Jan 1787 in Aldie, Loudoun Co., VA, USA. Elizabeth b 1787 was the oldest of Cornelius & Sarah McMakin Skinner's children. Her siblings, all Warren County Pioneer families were: Mary b 1788 m. Thomas Kiphart; Susan b 1788 m.John Couden; (Mary & Susan were twins); Addah Elizabeth b 1791 m. Henry Hollingsworth; Emma "Emily b 1793 m. Samuel Bowman; Richard Alexander (their only son) b 1796 m Eliza Jack; and Harriet b 1800 m. Daniel McCray. Elizabeth married "Joshua" Joseph Taylor 1807 Loudoun Co., VA. He was her first husband and father of her four children, all b in VA: Richard Skinner Taylor 1810-1890 married Sarah Kiphart, his 1st cousin (dau of Thomas & Mary Kiphart), they had 5 children; Sarah Ann Taylor 1812-1894 m. William Riley 1813-1893, they had 11 children, then she married James Humphreys; William G Taylor 1815-1842 who m Anna Maria Powers and had 2 children: Joshua P. Taylor who d in the Civil War and Marietta Taylor who m. Gallagher; and, John T Taylor 1818-1849, who did not marry & d at age 31. Sarah came to OH first with her other children. Elizabeth and Joseph "Joshua" stayed behind with their babies.Cornelius, father of Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Joshua and their children were expected to follow the rest of thefamily. Presumably, they stayed in VA for a time because the children were so small & to wrap up business in Aldie, Loudoun County, VA. Family records say they ran an Inn. "Joshua" Joseph Taylor died (precise date unknown), as did her father Cornelius Skinner (who d 1814) before they could make the trip to Warren County, OH to settle on the beautiful Warren County Original Skinner Survey #1552, of some 2600 acres. So Elizabeth made the trip alone with her 4 young children, according to family record. Undoubtedly, someone accompanied her on the dangerous trip ca 1820 but there is no family record of who came with her and the children from VA. Elizabeth married Absalom "AC" Newkirk 19 Aug 1824 in Warren Co., OH. Undoubtedly, he was (step) father to her children for many years." |
