is written below)
W.W.Wales Dear cousin,
Minneapolis Thy welcome letter was received in due time but as I did not have
the letter referred to I had to make inquiry and at last got a copy from Elizabeth
Nicholson together with a history of the Irwin family of which our grandmother
was one. I have been afflicted with a rheumatic affliction in my right arm the
past winter made it difficult to use the pen consequently got Richard Wales
to copy. I presume it is nearly correct or as much so as can be had from anything
now to be obtained. I did have some writing of our grandfather George Wales
but cannot find it if it should be found I will send a copy of it also.
I have desired to have some more information of our ancestors but must content
myself with what we have but if thee has anything more I would be glad to have
it if convenient.
I am in my 72nd year but enjoy good health aside from rheumatism after using
tobacco for fifty years. I left it off a little over one year since it was a
hard struggle but have held out this far and hope to be able to continue. I
am living in town Richard is on the farm. Nicholson family are in Indianapolis.
Valentine lives with Thomas Butterworth they both live on spirtualism it is
their religious meat and drink. Thomas’s family all moved and are gone
one in Boston one in Tennessee one in Iowa and one in Colorado none of them
of the same faith.
I would be glad to hear from thee and family and connection generally including
thy brothers and sisters family. Is Betsy Judkins living (transcribers note:
Elizabeth Wales married Dr. Elam Judkins living in Hancock County, Indiana at
time of letter)
Now in regard to the visit spoken of. It would be pleasant to do so but we have
done up our share of traveling we have traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific
and must content ourselves by enjoying the reflection of what we have seen of
this world and prepare for the next acceptably as becomes our Christian duty.
I must close in love to all respectably
S.M. Wales
