ALVA HILL was born in Harlan Township, this county, March 21, 1867. He is the oldest child of M. R. and Sophia Hill, and grandson of Thomas Jones, Sr., deceased. He received a common school education at Oak Ridge, in Salem Township, and often recalls the days spent in school and on the playground. Of the family he has one brother and two sisters living, and one brother and one sister deceased. His entire younger days were spent on the farm with his parents. At the age of twenty-one he commenced farming in a general way on his grandfather's farm. In the spring of 1897, he began dairy farming, and since then has devoted his whole attention to that business, with good success. On December 30, 1890, he was married to Miss Ada Eltzroth, daughter of Joseph and Louise R. Eltzroth, and is now settled on his farm near Murdoch, Hamilton Township. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hill, viz.: Ida M., Anna M., Harry E., Howard L., Ruth L. and John O. He and his wife are doing everything in their power to give their children an education and to make their home the most pleasant place for them.
