ROBERT WILSON GILCHRIST is one of the oldest persons now living in Warren County. He is of Scotch-Irish descent and was born in Montgomery County, November 4, 1809. His father, Robert Gilchrist, was born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1770, and, in 1802, removed to Montgomery County, Ohio. Here he resided until May, 1812, when he volunteered under Col. Van Horn in Hull's army, and was killed in the battle of Brownstown, August 12, 1812, the subject of our sketch, at that time, not being three years old. In 1817 the mother [Mary (Wilson) Gilchrist] , with her seven children, settled in Lebanon, which place Mr. Gilchrist has ever since regarded as his home. When seventeen or eighteen years of age he went to Middletown, Ohio, as a clerk in a general store, and afterward engaged for a number of years in merchandizing at Middletown and Lebanon, Ohio. About 1870 he went to West Virginia and engaged in the oil business, remaining there about ten years, during which time he accumulated a ' comfortable fortune and then returned to Lebanon and has been living in a quiet and unostentatious manner, either in Lebanon or the immediate vicinity, ever since. At the age of ninety-four he may be daily seen upon our streets and recognized as belonging to a generation that has nearly, if not quite all, passed away.
