Please note …most interestingly, John was born in 1831, and not 1833, as later became the belief. I have his birth certificate, and so yes, I’m sure about this. |

Ohio" published in 1891 by Frank A. Bone. The map shows John Allison's
40 acre farm (shaded yellow) to the south of the Village of Morrow The
farm is located in Military Survey #2529 of the Virginia Military District
on what is today known as Morrow-Rossburg Road. The farm shaded green is that of Oscar T. Ludlum whose granddaughter, Margaret, would one day marry John Allison's youngest son, Edwin Ruthwin Allison. |
James Alason, (Erskine) married Janet Patoun, (Erskine), in 1711. They had four children –
Walter married Agnes Erskine in Houston and Killelan Parish
in 1743 – (The fact that her surname is Erskine is purely coincidental.
Walter and Agnes then had their children in Houston and Killelan Parish. The
children were
Walter then returned to the parish of Walter, his father,
and James his grandfather, and thus married Janet Ersdon in Erskine in 1777.
Walter and Janet had ten children and they were all born in Erskine. The children
were:
Samuel stayed in Erskine, married Ann Buchanan in 1824, and also had ten children, all born in Erskine. The ten Children they had were:
David married Christina Kilpatrick in 1870, moved to Paisley, and had three children :
Alexander was my grandfather, having my father, David, in 1924, who in turn fathered me, Hugh Allison in 1960.
John Allison, (son of Samuel Allison and Ann Allison nee Buchanan), was born in Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on 4th Dec 1831. He enlisted in the British Army, (presumably locally, and presumably sometime around 1848-1852 ish).
He was stationed in Bermuda about 1854, and he is said to have written home, saying that there was a lot of fever in Bermuda at that time. My grandfather, (who died in the middle 1960's), said that he was sure that it was from Bermuda that John deserted. But then he was heard of in Canada. And when he next showed up, settled, it was in 1858, in Morrow, Ohio. So he either deserted from Bermuda, and fled to Canada, and thence into the States, or alternatively, his regiment may have moved from Bermuda to Canada, after which he did his disappearing act. Anyway, he arrived in Morrow in 1858, and enlisted in Coy A, 12th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served through the American Civil War, and was wounded at the Battle of Antietum.
Round about 1910 he wanted to return to Scotland to visit, once more, before his death. It was my grandfather Alexander G. K. Allison who corresponded with the war office at that time, to ensure that there would be no charge against John for his desertion in 1854, if he were to pay a visit, later that year, in 1910. John Allison died in 1928, aged 96 years.
His descendants are– 3 sons, 1 daughter –
